Can you help identify my dogs breed?
Hello everyone,
Just wondering if anybody could give me some insight into what breeds my dog is mixed with. I got her (Hera) from the Humane Society about 2 years ago. When I got her they said she was about 2 years old, which would make her about 4 years old now. She has loads of energy, and has not slowed down a bit since we got her. She is very lovable and always wants to be with someone, she thinks she is a lap dog although she is 52lbs haha. she has very short coarse hair, but very soft on her head and neck. has a white speckled patch on her chest. and some greying/white on her muzzle. stands about 24 inches People are always commenting on how she looks so young, and how she has lots of growing to do, although she hasn't grown a whole lot since we got her, except she filled out a bit with her new diet. She loves kids She will play ball ALL DAY! she is a very fast runner, almost greyhound-ish. gets along great with our cat, and the dog next door, but seems hostile to other dogs when out on walks When she sees a squirrel or rabbit she freezes, her whole body tenses up, but then quickly makes a mad dash for it. LOVES the water and snow It is clear to me that she is part lab, but not too sure about what she is mixed with. i have included some pictures, hopefully someone can provide me with some insight Thanks in advance Last edited by ringer; September 30th, 2007 at 09:39 PM. |

Hera isn't exactly one to share LOL, unless of course Molly is willing to throw the ball for her haha |

Molly's kinda of unsure of the definition of the word "share" as well. I think she thinks of me as her "official ball tosser" and not much else

Lab for sure but I see hound in those ears & face esp pic 3 & 4 the ears are too long for a pure lab (no matter what size)
pic 4 his nose is too long & narrow for pure lab also shows hound when you look at how the ears sit in pic 5 that says hound sure is cute

Thanks growler, yeah, i kind of suspected hound in her somewhere, not so much from her physical characteristics (im no expert) but more of how she acts when she sees "small game" lol Hera and the beagle next door are always on lookout for squirrels in the back yard, and she is very persistent, will wait in an aggressiive stance for it to come down, or will jump and do flips thinking she is going to get high enough to grab it lol |

Mister is 3/4 lab, 1/4 boxer and 85lbs LOL!! my thoughts were dane mix but seems pretty small to be a dane mix.
when you say coarse fur, you mean stiff, crimpy, slightly curly? can you get a close up of the fur? i know thats like asking the impossible. but would really help to figure out what else besides lab. dont the greyhounds have really soft if stiff fur?? head seems a little bulky for it though. starved at a young age maybe???? -ashley

as a matter of fact, when we got her from the humane society she was very underweight. she was 32lbs and could see her ribs, healthy and shiny coat other than that. but since then we put her on a new diet (high fat/protein) and she is now 52lbs.
what does this mean do you think? or what are you emplying? |

i googled a picture of walker hound (that is what someone once told me she looked like) and i got this picture
and compare it with now this is 2 days after we got her, and you can see how skinny she was, but i can definetly see a resemblance between Hera and the walker hound. also i have attached an image of her tail, the way it drops and curls almost like a greyhound? a picture of her chest, the white spot, i dont know if this means anything? and her teeth? also dont know if you can get anything from this by the way, she loves getting her picture taken, and the cat is also a ham for the camera here are some pics purely for entertainment: yes she is talented, can carry 2 tennis balls in her mouth really wants that ball now she really wants inside lol hera loves the snow told you she is photogenic grrr and one of the cat for good measure |

I'm sure that there is pointer of some type in there, either German Shorthaired or English Pointer. That would account for the ticking on the chest. Looking head on at your dog, the face shape is very much like a pointer as well.

yes, i have also been told she looks a bit pointer. once in a while she will do the "point" where she freezes and one paw comes up, her neck straightens out and makes a flat line from her back to her head and she is ready to go. her tail never straightens out like pointers do though. the white on her chest is known in pointers?

definitely lab crossed with something...and 52 pounds is definitely not too big for a lab!!!!! I agree maybe pointer or other gun dog..although the abdominal tuck and tail remind me of greyhound...
whatever she is, she is Beautiful!!!!

52 lbs is actually TOO LIGHT for a Lab. The Canadian standard for females is 55 lbs. to 70 lbs.
I see Lab and Hound as well. The ticking could come from a couple of hound breeds. It also looks like she does not have the double coat of a Lab (though hard to tell in photos) and that would be the Hound influence. Beautiful, shiny coat she has. |

your dog lloks to be a lab/hound cross-possibly plott or redbone coonhound. I have three stray mutts and have come pretty close to being sure as to other dog breeds. wish you luck, she looks healthy and shiny, absolutely healthy -may still grow into her slight frame...

she is soooo identical to my lab/shepherd cross, Brina's white patch is much smaller, but the way yours holds the tail down and curled...the size, mine is also 24 inches tall, but she weighs 64 pounds

She very much looks like our Lab/Walker hound
And Im convinced they may be related, as the mother of our pup has had quite a few litters stretched out over the years. We've been searching for other Lab/walker hound mixes and have came up empty handed.. maybe its so, maybe not.. heres a couple recent photos of AKIRA, shes almost 10 months she had the most white marking of the litter, her white spotted boots being what sealed the deal for us. Others in the litter having little to no white markings at all |

Hey all, I had a male a few years ago that i would swear is your dogs twin, right down to the little white chin. Mine was a lab/english setter mix. She's ever so cute no matter what she is.

Your dog looks soooo identical to my female German Shorthaired Pointer that I had to post a reply. Our GSP is the all-liver variety, so the white patches may be from her other side, or it could be some pointer flecks coming through. Her personality and energy and skinniness sound extremely similar to ours as well.
