Underlying Illness? - 8yr old Shepherd/Beagle Mix

Hi everyone,

Today at the park I noticed my dog had a bald patch on her left ear. The hair is completely gone on the quarter-sized patch, and there's also a brown splotchy patch in the middle of it as well.

My family is extremely low on money right now and we really don't want to have to see a vet if possible. Obviously if it's necessary we will do anything to make sure she is healthy, but is it something I should be really concerned about? Have any of you had an experience similar to this? Any thoughts or knowledge is very much appreciated.

Some additional information:

She is an 8 year old female German Shepherd/Beagle Mix. Prone to cysts and limps on one of her back legs sometimes due to joint issues, but otherwise very healthy, friendly and playful. She gets a lot of exercise and eats regularly.

Thank you all in advance
