Yes we have a 65lb 8 month old male puppy.

All I can say is lose or hide all of your shoes and slippers, and vacuum parts, and throw carpets and cosks and.. Well you get the picture!!

OHHHH So young to be away from the mom, my suggestion is to get it into OB classes soon, they are wonderful dogs, friends of mine had a couple, they were bought from a breeder stateside at 12 weeks old. What breeder did yours come from?

One lives two doors down from us. Unfortunately is owned by the wrong kind of people. He is basically ignored all day--barks at the world from behind his fence and is people and dog aggressive when out on leash pulling owners down the block. He is about 5 yrs old and I feel so bad for him.

They're a breed I considered, but hubby wanted a more laid back and less dominant breed, so we went with a greater swiss mountain dog. Honestly I don't have time or desire to deal with a possibly high energy breed right now anyway. I think they're awesome looking dogs though.

I've never actually met an owner of one in person, not sure how common they are.

i have a 9 month old cane corso / akita mix a canita if you will...Got Smudge when he was 6 weeks old now 9 months and 100lbs..Dog is great with my 2kids 4 and 7 ......

Hey Cane Corso Owners.. I really need your help.
I am looking for any owners in Hamilton Ontario. I know this thread is old but I see someone from Hamilton here already. I also need advice about my Cane Corso just in general. I am wondering if anyone has dealt with Cherry Eye with their Cane Corso? I have a seven and a half month old male he is beautiful but he has had cherry eye in both eyes and in his short time with us I have already had the cherry eye tucked Twice in the left eye and Once in the right. And now for a third time the left gland has prolapsed and we have Cherry Eye again. My breeder keeps saying to have the tear gland snipped but my Vet here in Stoney Creek keeps telling me they don't do that in Canada becauase of the fact the dog can go blind, my breeder says she has always had her dogs tear glands snipped when they pop out and she is reputable from Albany, NY.she also says its very rare for the dog to go blind and that she has never had one go blind personally.. I know there is a vet in Dunnville, ON that does the snipping of the gland but I don't know anyone with a cane corso that has gone there. I have so far spent close to 5000.00 on surgeries for the dogs eyes since February and I just really need some advice.. Even if you're not from Hamilton has anyone had their Cane Corso's tear gland thing that causes Cherry Eye clipped? I am going to start a new thread too but I really hope one of you guys replies to me..

wow 5 grand already?? Mine had cherry eye when I got him at 8 mo, he had it since he was about 4mo old. I consulted with a few vets including an eye specialist (canine optomologist? sp?) at Forest Hill Animal Clinic in Toronto.

Yes, the recommended method is always a tuck not a full removal. Your vet is wrong however when he says no one in Canada does this, completely wrong. With a full removal you run the risk of dry eye, a risk. Some dogs manage just fine, others need eye drops for the rest of their life. There are further possibly complications related to dry eye which at worst can cause the loss of the eye but that is not the one and only certain outcome. There are plenty of dogs who have the gland removed and live normal happy lives. So your vet is being a little dramatic.

As I said a tuck, even multiple ones are always preferred, but ultimately if it is not holding most vets will end up removing the gland. Subjecting the dog to constant surgeries for what is really mostly a cosmetic issue is just wrong. Some old school vets will remove the gland right away and not even bother with a tuck and I do find a lot of people in the Corso community with the same attitude.

Back to my dog. He had the tuck, and 2 days after surgery we could already see the tissue coming apart and the gland re-emerging. The surgery cost me about $700 in Toronto at Banks Animal Hospital. When we noticed the surgery didn't work, the vet immediately did another surgery at no additional cost. This time he did a tuck with additional stitches to hold the gland in place (plus he used different stitches then the first time). This has held perfectly since and we have not had any issues in over 3 years.

I don't know if he is still there, but one of the vets I spoke to who would have just done a removal right away was an old gentleman at the Dixie Eglinton Animal Clinic in Mississauga. I had my boy neutered there as they were a fraction of the cost of all the other vets I called.

Thank you so much for your advice. I have had a nightmare with my vet. Mine cost so much because an overpriced opthamalogist at Oakville Mississauga Vet Hosptial did the surgery. He tucked both eyes and then 3 weeks later the left eye popped again. then he tucked the left eye again with different stitches and now 8 weeks later its popped out again. I really appreciate the heads up on the doctor at the Dixie Eglington Clinic. I will most definitely be calling there. Thank you so much again.

The optamologist at Forest Hill quoted me about 1200 to do the surgery, although this was a few years ago.

Call around a few vets, you would be surprised how different the fees for the same procedure can be. Just as an example simple stitches for one dog I know one clinic wanted 1100 she took the dog to a different vet and it cost her just under 400.

We currently have 4. None of them have had cherry eye but it does happen. Some vets will tack and if that doesn't work then they will remove it. Others remove right from the start. You will also get corso breeders who know there is cherry eye in their lines and they have tried it all with their own dogs so they do recommend removal from the start.

There are vets that still do the removal so your vet is lying to you. And you have certainly given tacking it a fair go at this point so if your current vet isn't willing to remove I would look for another vet that will.

Mary makes a good point, cherry eye is genetic so your breeder might be making the suggestion based on his experience with his lines. Have you asked the breeder which vet he would recommend?

Thanks so much for all of your advice, I really really appreciate it. My breeder reccomends tacking it and says that it is really common in her dogs and tacking it has never worked. She has a good vet that she has referred me to but I live in Ontario and she lives in Albany, NY. I found a vet that is about 3 hours away from my house that Lucas the breeder from Cane Corsos of Troy reccomended and I definitely trust his opinion. I may drive up there for the surgery I was just wondering in general if anyone has had problems with the removal of the gland completely because of all of my vets horror stories. He is a cutie! Our adult 2 came from NY as well but are now Atlantic Canadians We haven't had any troubles with eyes so sorry we couldn't help out much Glad you were able to find someone who could help you out.
