Dandruffy cat
My 3 year old tabby cat has dry skin, causing dandruff. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to help her out? I actually bought a vaporizer for next winter to help keep the air from getting really dry in my apartment, but is there something I can give her to help also? Her coat is really thick and pretty soft as it is, and I brush her every second or third day (she sheds a lot too).

food she eats
oh, sorry...she gets Iams dry cat food 24/7 and 2/3 of a small can of President's Choice soft food each day (she was putting on weight, so I lowered the amount she was allotted). It's the only canned food she'll eat and has about 7 different flavours, not including the seafood ones. I don't buy the seafood flavours.

supplement for skin
I give my tabby Omega-3 Fatty Acid Liquid made by Vet Solutions. Just a tiny bit on his food - the taste is negligeable - and his coat and skin are fabulous. Previously, he had a dandruff-like condition and it is completely gone. It's a bit expensive but lasts a long time. Don't worry about the fat aspect - it's the good kind - and my cat, who (ahem) tends to corpulence, hasn't gained an ounce.

I would try switching from IAMS to a better quality food. My cats eat Nutro and have soft and glossy coats with no dryness or dandruff!

My cats eat Nutro mixed with a bit of Eagle Pack! I used to spray olive oil on their food and that seemed to really help! Since I switched to Nutro, I haven't had to use the oil at all!!! Try the olive oil if you don't want to switch..but check out this website before you buy your next bag of Iams!!!

I had no idea
I guess I'm a bit naive....I assumed most pet food manufacturer's didn't do any animal testing - my mistake. I'm not particularly fond of Iams - my cat eats it, it's not crap and it's not overly expensive. I was always told to check the ingredients on pet food. If the first item is meat and not meat by-products, it's pretty good food. Is Nutro the only food you would recommend? I have a large bag of Iams to finish off first, but I will introduce my cat to something new - she gets bored with her food anyway. In the meantime I will add a bit of olive oil to her canned food. I did that during the winter, but stopped because I didn't know if it was actually good for her to have olive oil .

Really, Safflower oil is the same thing...one of those hidden vet clinic tricks no one will mention because your money will be spent elsewhere.

Vet Solutions
Figures! My sister gave me the Vet Solutions oil. She admits being in thrall to her vet, who could probably retire on what she has paid her over the years, no questions asked. She loves her beasts! But last week the vet quoted $500 - yikes - to have one cat's teeth cleaned. So I think my sister is beginning to turn this over in her mind...and about time. On the same subject - this probably belongs in another thread - did you hear about that group of vets in the Fraser Valley out in BC - all East Indian, from what I understand - who have started charging much more reasonable rates for procedures like neutering, and have suddenly been asked to take a language test by their professional association, even though there have been no complaints. Hmmm. Does anyone know anything more about this? Up the revolution!

$500 to clean one cats teath? That's robbery!!!!
I had Chicos teeth cleaned and it was $300,which I thought was extreemly expensive, since only a year earlier I paid $150 to have Rockys teeth cleaned. I am doing one cat a year,in the meantime they get crunchy treats, since brushing their teeth is an impossible task

Putting vaseline on a cat would result in a "well lubed " kitty I'm sure. Be prepared for frequent litter box changing too.

LMAO - Vaseline? Thankyou, but I think I'll pass....my cat's favourite places to roll around are on my couch and bed. I'm sure it works well though!

Update
ok, so I decided to give the Safflower Oil a try...I just put a little dribble in her soft food and mix it in. SHE KNOWS! I've had to be very sneaky - only a tiny dribble, anything more and she won't eat her food. Picky cat! I'm hoping it will work in time though. She seems to be itching less and I don't see dandruff in her fur. It's a much better (and safer) idea than Vaseline, though not as funny a suggestion. And once I get through this enormous bag of food, I'll try her on Nutrience. They eat less of the food if it's more nutritious, right? Therefore, it doesn't cost much more.

How do they KNOW??? I have to take Puss-Puss in for a blood test to check her thyroid levels ever so often. I am careful, I mean REALLY CAREFUL, to not give ANY hint that we're going to go to the vet. We don't talk about it. We don't even spell the words. We don't even talk around it. We don't deviate from our normal routine whatsoever. But, when it's time to go, she is in her secret hiding place, wherever that is.
