my schnoodle

Hi All. I'm new here so forgive me if I'm not doing this properly. Does anyone have a dog exhibiting the following symptoms?
rapid weight gain, lethargy, obvious onset of blindness (also rapid), urinating in house?
Thyroid has been ruled out. My dog is 9 yrs. old and prior to this has always been so healthy. Any info would be appreciated, I'm worried sick about my little guy.

Thanks.
Dianne

Were other things ruled out? Did his blood show anything?
I wonder what the rapid weight gain means.
Has he been checked for diabetes?

Along with diabetes, Cushing's disease is something you should look into: http://www.kateconnick.com/library/cushingsdisease.html

Quote:
Cushing's Disease (hyperadrenocorticism) is a common condition in older dogs, often mistaken for the aging process itself. Dogs gain weight, lose hair, urinate in the house, and make owners begin to prematurely consider euthanasia. Yet Cushing's disease is treatable and that treatment can result in a longer, more comfortable life for the dog and its owner.

I agree that diabetes and Cushing's would be high on my list of concerns. There are other potential causes for these signs. Bottom line though is that a veterinary examination is in order. The earlier we diagnose what is going on, the easier (and often cheaper) it is to treat or manage. Blood and urine testing will likely be needed. Radiographs (X-Rays) may be recommended as well. Good luck and please let us know how the veterinary visit goes.

schnoodle update

Thanks so much for your replies. Yes, we're definitely in the throes of having Charlie checked out. The vet has done blood work but I think it was only to check for a thyroid condition. He has asked me to collect two urine specimens, one first thing this morning and another later in the day. I'm not sure what the purpose is other than to show how much water he is actually drinking. The vet did mention Cushing's yesterday. I will ask him about the possibility of diabetes as well. Would that perhaps explain the rapid deterioration in Charlie's eyesight?
He's bumping into trees, falling off curbs when I walk him, and it honestly has happened within the past week or so...or at least that's when it became really noticeable to me.
I will definitely let you all know what happens next. It's somehow really comforting to know you're there. Thanks so much.

Dianne
