Birds and Dogs

We just lost our cat and our dog is missing him (as well as us of course). We're not sure if we want another cat though. I had a hand raised budgie for about 10 years that was a little sweetie. Thinking about the possibility of a cockatiel or other smallish bird. My budgie liked to come out of the cage to play so I'm sure other birds do as well. Just wondering how birds and dogs get along? My dog loved to play with the cat but obviously a bird is a little more delicate. She's 50 pounds so "playing" with a bird isn't really option. Just wondering if anyone has experience with birds and dogs and how you avoid accidents?

What does your dog do when it see a bird outside? That should give you an idea how it would act if the bird got out of it cage. I would not have a bird with my dig as Marty will be trying to go after all of the time . The only birds Marty does not mess around are wild turkeys.
