Saddle Thrombosis

Has anyone ever had a cat that survived Saddle Thrombosis and returned to normal? My daughter in law put her cat to sleep tonight because within minutes her cat became paralyzed from this thrombosis. The cat was in so much pain it was screeching, and bit her The vet gave her options, but didn't sound optimistic, so she decided to have her PTS. Now she feels guilty. I googled it and tried to tell her that the prognosis usually isn't good, but she still is feeling bad for her decision.

I'm so sorry. I don't know anything about that ailment but I have had a dog screaming in pain and I was ready to tell them to use the needle to spare her what sounded, and the Vet said it was, excruciating pain. My condolences to your DIL.

Thank You. I had never heard of it before, but after reading about it, it sounds very scary. One of my cats has a heart condition so it really scares me. I guess all you can do it make sure they take their meds and hope for the best.

For what it's worth, I think your DIL made the right decision. Saddle thrombosis is indeed very serious, and even if a recovery is made (typically not that common), there are huge risks for it happening again. So sorry that she had to go through this but at least she was able to help her furry friend. It's also totally normal that she is second-guessing her decision. She made it out of love for her kitty, and that's never a bad thing.

Thank you Sugarcatmom, I will tell her what you think, especially that it can happen again. The cat was in such terrible pain that she felt she had no choice, but afterwards regretted it. I told her that I read that its worse than having broken bones and very hard to relieve the pain. She was shocked because everything happened so fast,but maybe its better when it happens fast, I don't know.

Sadly, I think when it happens suddenly and you have to make a 'snap decision', you tend to second-guess yourself more. But, especially in those cases, it's often the only humane decision to make. My heart aches for your DIL, lindapalm.

It happened at night during a bad snow storm we were having and she had a hard time finding a vet that would come down fast to look at the cat I think it made it worse having to see and hear the cat for 2 or more hours before it could be treated. I talked to her tonight, and although I think she knows she had to do it, she wishes she could have had time to think it out. Both hers and her mothers hands are swollen from the cat biting them, and that cat was the most gentle thing, never would have done that normally. I told her that proves it had to be done, the poor thing was in such terrible agony.
