My 12 mo old Mona is suddenly depressed!
Hi all,
Hoping that you can help me out! My dog Mona, normally so playful and happy, refuses to play or eat treats. I take her outside and she barely runs or does anything. It's normally a battle to get her to do her business, but when we go for a walk it's now the first thing she does and she doesn't seem to want to see much else. I can't really trace it to anything concrete. I had my wisdom teeth out two days ago, so I've been home resting and haven't been able to do much. There was a bad thunderstorm this morning and although it doesn't usually scare Mona, my other dog suffers from extreme anxiety when she knows there's a storm. My sister's not home today...? I really have no idea! But it's horrible to see her like this! And it's hard not to take it personally. Thanks for the help! |

Hi, Melousa. Welcome to the board.
Any time you see a sudden behavioral change like that, a vet visit is in order. Is she eating anything at all, or just not her treats? If she's not eating at all, then the vet visit becomes more urgent. Is she still drinking?

It could be a HEALTH issue. Maybe she ate something bad? spoiled / rotten raw meat? raccoon poop in the backyard, etc? toxic food? Swallowed a hard object? = clogged intestine Make sure that your home is cool and that she is DRINKING WATER. If it's hot outside, don't let her stay outside for a long time. Is she constipated? Diarrhea? Check if she's missing any teeth. If she's not eating, you might have to buy special food (soft food) from the vet and force your dog to eat. Dog constantly scratches ear / ear smells bad / dog is not active = dog has ear infection - See vet - Make sure that your home feels cool (air conditioner or fan) - Make sure that your dog stays out of the sun and the heat - Make sure that your dog drinks water - Make sure that your dog's nose feels moist - Make sure that your dogs sleeps on a cool surface If your dog's nose looks dry, gently wet your dog's nose If the weather is too hot and humid Maybe put your dog in a pool or tub of cool water - not a lot of water - a little bit of cool water - let your dog's paw pads become wet - or use cold wet cloth to pat the dog's paw pads If your dog is breathing weird making weird breathing noises panting wheezing - cool down your dog or go see vet http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pet...r-dogs-ga3.htm http://www.marvelousproducts.com/Can...ive-my-dog.htm http://dogs.about.com/od/veterinaryc...ntocallvet.htm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHgrrA1ERgo - |

Thanks hazelrunpack,
My sister got home and she perked right up. It's funny, because my sister tends to work a lot and only the last week has she been home a lot. However, my sister is leaving for 3 months on a school exchange this Sunday. Any tips on how to prepare? I'm sure she's going to be down for a couple of days.. |

Aw, that's kinda sweet that she's so dependent on your sister. If it makes you feel any better, our dogs are always fondest of the one who happens to be gone most, too--so it's not that she likes you less, just that I'll bet you're home more.
As for preparing, I'm not sure there's much you can do, barring having your sister totally ignore Mona until she leaves, and that would be emotionally draining for both of them! After your sister leaves, make sure you stick to your normal routine (dogs are comforted by predictable schedules) but add a new twist (maybe at walk time, walk in a different area than normal just to change things up; or when it's time to play, use a novel toy.) Don't push her, don't coddle her. Offer her usual treats, but if she won't take them, don't make a big deal about it. She'll come around soon enough. Hope your mouth is feeling better soon, too!
