Dog parks..why the lack of ?
Im guessing this is a peeve on my part, Ive lived in the usa now for 10yrs and something Ive noticed is the lack of places to let your dog off the leash and play ball, and actually get rid of some pent up energy. I live at the moment in TN and what I can't understand is, if the state is going to enforce leash laws then why not have more dog parks ? they don't have to be overly huge, just fenced so that dogs can play with their owners and be safe. With an 8month old pup he has so much energy, walking just doesn't cut it, he needs to run. Some states have them, but Im at a loss to find anything here where I can let him run. Any ideas ?

Are there any groups in your area that do flyball or agility? Dog sports like that are excellent for burning some energy. I don't know about the dog park thing We have a few in my area but I have to drive like 15 mins to get to the nearest one, even though there is a huge park within walking distance that could easily support a fenced off-leash dog park.

I guess in most cities they are strict with enforcing the off-leash laws. I live in a small town (pop. 5000) and we don't have a dog park but luckily the municipality is OK with dog owners using the ball diamonds as a place to exercise our dogs (as long as we pick up of course) it's a great place to go and play ball and just let the dogs run safely.
Maybe call your city office and ask them the same question you asked us- and encourage all your dog-loving friends to do the same! Might put some pressure on them to find a suitable area for you!

We have LOTS of off-leash areas. I never thought that was a progressive thing;I thought everyone did it.
It results in way calmer, less aggressive dogs. Maybe approach your city council from that side, and see what happens. One thing you can count on, no city ever set aside land for a dog park without someone asking them to. |
