Wild Mouse - Injured in capture
Hello,
I just caught a pet mouse, however it was injured in the capture. I accidentally squished one of it's paws with a ruler when I was trying to get it out from beneath a shelf . Looks like there's a cut where I injured it's front paw, it bled for a short period (very little, about as much blood as a light paper cut). I've placed him in a box with food (peanut butter and pigeon feed), water, and shredded paper towels for now. I have a couple questions 1) When and how do I know this mouse will be ready to be released? (every time I go to observe it, it just stands very still) 2) How often do I clean it's box? 3) Is there anything I can do to expedite the healing process? Thank you! |

You shouldn't touch the mouse with your bare hands it will leave your sense on it and this could cause other mice to reject it once you do release it in the wild When you clean the cut use a Q tip that been dipped in warn water and dry it a with clean Q tip. Can the mouse walk OK , I would think once the cut had started to heal and not bleeding anymore you should let it go.

It's normal behavior for a mouse to freeze when it sees a predator (you ), so it may be okay to release now. If the paw has stopped bleeding and is moving around okay, I think I'd just let it go.
Is this is a wild mouse or a pet mouse? If it's a wild mouse, let it go outside a little distance from the house or it'll just come back in. If it's a pet, it should be okay to put back in it's cage.

That was my question too...
You called it a pet mouse...is it your pet? someone else's pet? If it IS a pet mouse, then releasing it in the wild (just like a pet cat) is a very bad idea. If it's a wild mouse...yup I agree with hazel's suggestion

Hope it gets well soon
Hi,
Glad to hear the way you are taking good care of an injured animal. Hope it gets well soon. Don't worry it may not respond to your gestures as it is not used to your company. If you really would wish to take professional guidance there are animal relocation services like Hawkeye Habitat who take care of injured and orphaned animals or even their rehabilitaion. Do post on how your newly found friend is doing. Hope evrything goes fine. Best wishes. Last edited by hazelrunpack; June 9th, 2016 at 08:09 AM. Reason: No promotional links, pls |
