An official Introduction.
Meet the new baby. He is incredibly sweet and easy going and Roland is amazing. The first hour and they are sitting on each side of the door whirring. Baby is trying very hard to convince me to let him out. No hissing, hackles or any negativity so far. I am going to give them a while and then try the baby gate. No rush. Roland has now lost interest a bit and gone to sleep in his under the bed hidey hole. Baby has made himself a nest in the (closed, I dont know how he opened the door) cupboard.

They will be buddies in no time. |

He is very comfortable. lol I spoke too soon about the hissing though Roland just got a little bee in his bonnet and hissed under the door. lol. I guess he will take a bit of convincing. Pretty good though for the first couple of hours. poor baby got a bit of fright. They have a pretty decent gap under the door for them to sniff each other through, so we will let them do that for today and see how it goes.

how long do I wait to do that introduction? like through the baby gates? Roland has been hissing a bit under the door if the baby is there. when the baby is not on the other side of the door, he lies upside down looking under it. Baby is completely comfortable in the room. Sleeps till I come in and then cuddles and plays with me. He runs away pretty fast when Roland hisses though. I want to put Roland in my room for a bit and let the baby out.I have tried to do this while Roland was sleeping in our room but baby just carried on sleeping . Maybe tomorrow I will more actively try this.??

I love the shot with the paws under the door!
The newcomer is definitely a cutie! I know nothing about introducing cats, but I hope Roland hits it off well with little Gray Baby. Have you decided on a name, yet?

I wouldn't rush things for now. I think giving them a few days with just the paws under the door is good.
I waited about a week before I actually let Vlad and Oksana loose in the same room, they were both still wee things. With Maks and Kiska, I didn't have the luxury of having a door on my room like I did in my old place, so I had to use the bamboo screen I use to block them from the front door. Vlad and Oksana were around 9-10 months old, and Maks and Kiska were about 3 or 4 months old. There was a lot of hissing and swatting. I think it did help a little that they could see each other. Of course, with Maks, they sprung him before the week was over. If Roland is showing interest, maybe it won't take longer than a week or two. I just don't think you should rush it too much. It would be harder if you put them together too soon and they aren't ready and things don't go well. Then you'd have to start all over again.

Aaww, what a sweetie, he reminds me of a cat I once had that was part Russian Blue and Manx (had a stubby tail). Max was a real sweetie-pie, and I think your boy will be too. No need to rush the intros, just let them get used to one another.

Thanks. I just feel so bad for the baby being locked in that room. I go in for a while all the time and play. he loves me then goes back to bed or to sleep on my lap. Roland is just sleeping on his perch or under the bed. seems to be oblivious of the other kitty.

I would not rush the intros. If you do it too soon and Roland and kitty aren't ready they may never be friends. Go slowly. If it takes a couple of weeks oh well. Better that than having to break up cat fights all the time.
I would leave them for tonight. Maybe tomorrow you can take the blankets they were sleeping on and exchange them. Give Roland the kittys, give kitty Rolands. That will give them both a chance to smell each other out before seeing each other. Once they are comfortable with that, and it may take a few days of switching blankets back and forth, then you can switch rooms. Let Roland in the kittys room and the kitty out to explore the rest of his surroundings. After a while, switch again. If that goes well then you can try a short introduction to each other. Before you do that you can take a towel, rub it on both of them so they smell the same. Or take baby powder in your palms, rub together, and then pet both kitties. Some people use a small dab of vanilla under the chin. The whole thing is to have them smell as much alike as possible. Don't push it. As in, don't put them in each other's face. Just let them meet and see what happens. Make sure you give Roland as much positive attention as you do the newbie. No raising voices if things get hairy. If things go wrong, too much hissing, fighting, etc, then separate them and start over. Don't leave them alone together for quite a while until you are absolutely positive they will be ok with no fighting. This can be a long drawn out process but in order for it to succeed it has to be done right. You want them to be friends. After all, the whole idea of another kitty was a friend for Roland. If they are fighting all the time then it won't work. Hoep some of this helps. |

Thank you 14+. It really does help. baby was crying under the door a while ago so I went in and we had a good play. Roland lay upside down on the other side of the door whirring. I came out and gave them both treats and Roland lots of love. I am at home till Wednesday and have absolutly nothing but washing to do till then. So I have lots of loving time for both. Im thinking theres not going to be too much sleeping tonight.

So we have the babygates up cause I was in the room with SPOCK (heehee) and Roland was sticking his paws under the door and crying. When we put the baby gates up Roland came and rubbed up against them talking to the baby and sticking his paw through. Spock was interested for a while but a little hesitant (not surprising considering that Roland has hissed at him a few times), then he turned around and went to bed . So I guess its up to the new kitty now when he is ready to be friends. There was no sign of agression what so ever. I guess Roland just needed to see the baby face to face.
yay! We decided on Spock cause he has a strange face. The front of his face is kind of round and he has pretty freaking big ears. |

I think seeing each other certainly helps. Spock huh? Do I sense some Star Trek fans?

lol. not trekkies by any means. It just kind of suits him! we will see how it sticks.... He is pretty sleepy this morning. He was crying at 3:30 so I went in there and snuggled with him for a while. Im not sure if he was awake for most of the night, but I didnt hear him and hes sure tired now!
Roland is camped out outside the baby gates. |

So Roland was sleeping in our room so I closed the door and let Spock (or Squeak, I havent decided yet) out to explore. Oh boy, he had so much fun! took him all of about 10 minutes to feel right at home. He was out for about half and hour then Roland was scratching to get out. I put baby back in the room and the baby gate back up. He was crying pitifully, poor baby. So Roland went over to investigate. Talked a little bit and then put his paw throught the wires and gave him a swat on the head! (no claws.)
I have now put Spock in our room and let Roland go into the spare room to smell around. The are both quiet now, so I guess its explore time. |

Great job. Sounds like it won't be long before they will be playing with each other. No claws is a good thing!!

lol. thats what the Bf said. why dont you just call him baby? naa. I like something a little different. Roland is just about frantic to get in there, but Im not sure his intentions are all that good. The baby is back in his room behind the gate crying and Roland is sitting watching.

He sure IS a sweetie! They both are
Sounds like things are going well...some take to each other faster than others...use your "mommy" instincts and all will be fine As for names...you have to think the name sounds cute cuz the kitty is small...how will it sound when he is big? I am a big fan of "people" names cuz you can always say I have to get home cuz "Roland" needs me for something to get out of a bad/boring situation and you aren't lying Don't ask me how my Mooki got her name though...long story
