what would increasing the thiamine level in a kitties food do?
Just curious what other's think ... what would increasing the thiamine level in an 18 year old kitty do for him? Would it help with a weight problem thst has existed for years? would it help his eyesight? would it have other positive effects on his health or be too much of a good thing.
I have been giving my Sam who is 18 yrs old a supplement only available in the US for several months now and it seems to have improved his health ... BTW Sam was diagnosed with mild CKD several years ago... anyone have an opinion on this? The supplement is made by Vetri-Science and only available through vets in the US and Canada

I'm curious to know exactly which Vetri-Science product you've been given.
Thiamine is Vitamin B1. It is common to supplement an older cat's intake of B vitamins - and, in an older cat with some loss kidney function, it can become almost a necessity in order to 'maintain the balance' of the whole metabolic system. My suspicion is that whatever you're using is a complete B vitamin supplement, rather than just the B1. Here's a great coverage of B vitamins from the 'oracle' of all things kidney: B VITAMINS, INCLUDING VITAMIN B12 - TANYA'S COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO FELINE CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE ...and, an extract from there: Quote:

Hi Rustycat the VETRI-SCIENCE product I have been giving Sam and Smokey is cslled Vetri-Science Nu-Cat Senior, and as I've said Sam is showing improvement in his eyesight, as well as his ability to get around without his hip clicking. He has lost weight which in Sam's case is a good thing...
He used to weigh about 23 lbs when my vet estimated he should weigh between 17 1/2 and 18 lbs (he is a very large kitty) and she said that if he started losing weight then we would know his kideys were causing a problem and we would do more blood work then ... He is definitely showing signs of being stronger... he is able to jump on and off my bed without a problem, his pupils are no longer cloudy and he seems to be able to see things more clearly like small treats I put out for them ... he also wants to play with the others I have never had a kitty live this long, he will be 18 yeaes old in July Here are the ingredients in very 4 chews; Active Ingredients Per 4 Chews: L-Taurine 200 mg New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel 100 mg Calcium (Calcium Carbonate) 50 mg Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) 30 mg Linoleic Acid 25 mg N,N-Dimethylglycine HCl (DMG) 15 mg Betaine HCl 10 mg Methionine 10 mg Gamma Linolenic Acid 10 mg L-Glutamine 10 mg Milk Thistle Extract 10 mg Bilberry Extract 7 mg Choline (Choline Chloride) 5 mg Coenzyme Q10 5 mg Cystine 5 mg D-Pantothenic Acid (Dicalcium Pantothenate) 5 mg Lecithin 5 mg L-Tyrosine 5 mg Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) 5 mg Lipase Enzymes 5 mg Proanthocyanidins (from Grape Seed Extract) 4.75 mg Pepsin 3 mg Bromelain 3 mg Protease 3 mg Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) 3 mg Phosphatidylserine 3 mg Inositol 2 mg Para-aminobenzoic Acid (PABA) 2 mg Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) 2 mg Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) 2 mg Thiamine (Vitamin B1) 2 mg Magnesium (Magnesium Oxide) 1.5 mg Iron (Iron Proteinate) 1.5 mg Zinc (Zinc Proteinate) 1 mg Potassium (Potassium Chloride) 0.25 mg Iodine (Calcium Iodate) 0.040 mg Copper (Copper Gluconate) 0.030 mg Chromium (Chromium Methionine) .0035 mg Selenium (Sodium Selenite) 0.0035 mg Biotin 0.002 mg Folic Acid 0.002 mg Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12) 0.002 mg Papain 0.0016 mg Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A) 900 IU Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) 20 IU d-alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) 5 IU Inactive Ingredients: brewers yeast, black currant seed oil, calcium sulfate, canola oil, chicken liver flavor, citric acid, fish oil concentrate, glycerin, maltodextrin, mixed tocopherols, propionic acid, soy lecithin, rosemary extract, silicon dioxide, sodium alginate, vegetable oil, whey.
