what would increasing the thiamine level in a kitties food do?

Just curious what other's think ... what would increasing the thiamine level in an 18 year old kitty do for him? Would it help with a weight problem thst has existed for years? would it help his eyesight? would it have other positive effects on his health or be too much of a good thing.

I have been giving my Sam who is 18 yrs old a supplement only available in the US for several months now and it seems to have improved his health ... BTW Sam was diagnosed with mild CKD several years ago... anyone have an opinion on this?

The supplement is made by Vetri-Science and only available through vets in the US and Canada

I'm curious to know exactly which Vetri-Science product you've been given.

Thiamine is Vitamin B1.

It is common to supplement an older cat's intake of B vitamins - and, in an older cat with some loss kidney function, it can become almost a necessity in order to 'maintain the balance' of the whole metabolic system.

My suspicion is that whatever you're using is a complete B vitamin supplement, rather than just the B1.

Here's a great coverage of B vitamins from the 'oracle' of all things kidney: B VITAMINS, INCLUDING VITAMIN B12 - TANYA'S COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO FELINE CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

...and, an extract from there:
Quote:
The Importance of B Vitamins
B vitamins are water-soluble, so are often lacking in CKD cats, who lose much of their vitamin B through the increased urination associated with CKD. Cats who are not eating much will also probably not be taking in enough B vitamins. A lack of vitamin B may cause loss of appetite, or occasionally may cause twitching or itching. Vitamin B deficiencies are also known to cause non-regenerative anaemia. A lack of vitamin B1 may cause an inability to lift the head.

Your vet may therefore suggest a supplement in order to avoid or assist with these problems. This is particularly important if your cat is anaemic or at the low end of the laboratory range for PCV or HCT (measures of anaemia), but even non-anaemic cats often seem to feel and act better when given additional B vitamins.
Hope something there helps !

Hi Rustycat the VETRI-SCIENCE product I have been giving Sam and Smokey is cslled Vetri-Science Nu-Cat Senior, and as I've said Sam is showing improvement in his eyesight, as well as his ability to get around without his hip clicking. He has lost weight which in Sam's case is a good thing...

He used to weigh about 23 lbs when my vet estimated he should weigh between 17 1/2 and 18 lbs (he is a very large kitty) and she said that if he started losing weight then we would know his kideys were causing a problem and we would do more blood work then ...

He is definitely showing signs of being stronger... he is able to jump on and off my bed without a problem, his pupils are no longer cloudy and he seems to be able to see things more clearly like small treats I put out for them ... he also wants to play with the others
