Tricks to teach smart dogs

Jessie loves to learn new stuff.

She came to us knowing "sit" - someone must have taught her.

We taught her shake and lie down in one evening, last weekend.

Since then, she has learned shake the other hand, and crawl - no pics of those yet.

I plan to teach beg, roll-over, and master "stay".

What other fun tricks have you taught your dogs that I can teach her? She loves to "perform" and all these so far have taught been without treats. In fact I tried to bring in a treat to start the "roll-over" training and she was totally distracted.

Thanks,
Diane

This is the first one that wanted to do tricks, Chris, since 1991. I had a poodle mix that was into these. My latest dogs, I did teach shake and lie down, then I gave up. LOL

Take a bow is nice for a dog her size. Spin. Play dead...
Don't forget fetch, can be very handy to get her to pick up something if you drop it, not just playing with toys.

Sam - I forgot to mention the "go get the ball" she does pretty well. And "let" means I want the ball. Also, getting that one. Spin or turn and play dead are good ones, thanks.

like I had someone else on here, don't forget to incorporate tricks together, because of my daycare I teach my dogs "stop, drop(laydown) and roll, and also along the same line, "FIRE" in which they drop (laydown) and crawl......do each alone then slowly have them do a sequence of them till they do all the steps at one time. I love teaching tricks to dogs, we do turn, roll over, be a monkey (sits up and wraps her paws around our outstretched arm), speak (bark) , talk nice (grumbles) and play dead when we shoot her.

The very first dog we adopted in 1975 did all kinds of things, she thrived on attention, anything we taught her she learnt right off the bat. Since then it has been hit and miss, especially with the Bassets'.

On thing we did teach Tina (1st) that came in handy......when we came in from outside she would sit at the door to get wiped down, first all 4 paws, then the face, then her bum....the only glitch we had to do it weather she was wet or dry

I forgot to mention she knows how to scratch at the back door to go out. Not always.

We also hung a jingle bell on the door knob - she smacks that now to go out! Still learning to do that only when she needs to go....not just after she comes back in. LOL

Can't forget 'sit pretty' (sittin' with the front paws up) and 'back up'. That second one comes in very handy sometimes when you need to get them out of a tight spot...it's fun to learn and useful, too! The best of both worlds.

spin in a circle - both directions
side - he comes from where ever and sits at your left side
walk backwards
through - runs through your legs, turns around once behind you and stick his head back out between your legs
mat - go lay down on your bed
balance a treat on his nose until released
stand up

they are just a few ideas

I was teaching bang your dead no your not.

I would put him in a down say bang your dead and get him on his side.then touch him and say not dead just injured.then tell him to crawl to safety as i kept a treat almost touching the ground slowly pulling it away.

Can be a hard trick to teach.he would do it as long a he was calm. and i had fun teaching it.been awhile since he's done it.

Remember that old Monte Python routine--"I'm not dead, yet....I'm getting better..."? Was that in the Holy Grail movie? But that would be cute for the Bang You're Dead thing, AD! Get him to put his head up when you say "I'm not dead yet" and crawl on the "I'm getting better" part of it!

If i can get him calm enough i will get the wife to video the trick.it's getting the crawl that's hard.almost like an army crawl.

Hazel i will try it that also.he will need some practice again but it will be fun.

Scruffy knows a great trick - in the middle of the night, jump on the bed then fall on top of mom! Works every time...grrr!
Ok sorry, that was the lack of sleep talking.
He knows the difference between bring toy, find toy and drop toy.
He knows wait, leave it, come, sit, stay, down.
He knows to wait at the gate until I invite him out of the yard (saves wear and tear on my shoulder). He waits to get out of the car until I've attached or removed the leash.
He also knows how to look cute and suck up to strangers for snuggles!

Mine know all the basics,my boxer/pit is verbal. if you do not pay attention to her(petting or playing with toys) she will "talk" kinda like a whine but not really. Same goes for if you have a treat and ask her to talk,or ask her what she wants. She can roll over as well. Her and Bruin(my black lab) can each balance a cookie on their nose. they will wait till you tell them ok. they can also keep it there, and shake a paw without it dropping, then they throw it in the air and catch it.
