Dogs and germs
Got a great question for the doctor in the house! I have a home based daycare and was asked to treat the dogs for anything that could be passed on to the kids via licking the kids My boston is on steroids for unknown allergies and the other is healthy. I am fully aware about fleas and heartworm, I want to know more about worms that can transfer through stools in the yard etc.........

I've had dogs and a home based daycare for 22 yrs, Brina does her "duty" in one part of the yard only and I clean it immediately, they only disease they can "share" is lepto so the board of health stepped in and checked my dogs records and charts when she had lepto and the children had to be watched for signs of "flu" that is all lepto would be to them.

yes larvae, eggs, etc in stool can be transmitted to dogs and also humans. if dog steps in poo, then licks it paw, then licks kids mouth..is a possiblity

yes dogs can pass germs on the lighter side, I would be more afraid of what I could catch from a kid. Colds, flu eyc...pink eye...

Ringworm and pink eye can transfer. Oh, fleas and ticks. Oh, tapeworns. Darn, I keep thinking of more. Those are the only ones I know of but do you have to concern yourself with other stuff dogs might bring in that would hurt your kids but not the dog? Salmonella, for instance, is not as big a problem for dogs but if your kids handle rotten food the dog can eat with impunity are you worried about that too? Does one of the children have a compromised immune system? I did read an article that suggested therapy dogs were not a good idea in hospitals with sick people but it did say most healthy people were not at risk if usual handwashing protocol was followed.

My niece used to run a daycare, I was helping her for awhile and I've never been so bloody sick in my life! I don't know what I had from those kids but I thought I was going to croak!! Now, I've had cats and dogs for over 20 years, so far I've never caught anything from them. I've had the normal colds but this was some sort of flu or something. I was so congested that my eardrum burst from the pressure build-up. That was enough for me to tell her that I couldn't do it anymore!
I suppose if your animals are looked after properly, regularly treated for parasites and your yard is kept picked up, there shouldn't be any issues |
