very old cat sometimes cries

I have female cat about 20 years old. She has lost her hearing, a lot of weight and some agility. However, she still eats and drinks well, uses the litter box regularly, can do the stairs and can jump up on beds and couches. My concern is that several times a day she will meow or cry like a baby almost for a minute or two and seems lost and disorientated. I'd hate to think she's in pain but could she be?

Yes, most definately. You don't want to to see your beloved pet suffer. You have had a wonderful 20 years with your cat and very fortunate. I think a trip to the vet may be in order.

Thanks for answering. I will dread the visit to the vet because my pet hates to get in a car and gets traumatized by the vet even though he's very kind and gentle. But I suppose I need his professional advice........ even though I may not want to hear it.

My Talon does this, but only if we go upstairs without "telling" him, but he's done this since we got him @ 5 weeks.
It does sound like your cat could be in pain, and trip to the pet would be a good idea. Always better safe than sorry

Also at 20yrs,she probably suffers from senility and would cry
when she's confused,not really knowing what is going on.
But I still think a visit to the vet is important,it does not mean she has to be put down,she could have another couple of years,it's not that unusual.

I realize I am a statesider and not Canadian and live in a remote area however our vets do make house calls and if your pussy cat is not taking kindly to transport why not arrange to have her examined and/ or placed at the foot of the rainbow bridge in comfortable and familar surroundings?
I would not want her last earthly memories to be of being frightened and scared.
Consider having her made comfortable and kept calm.

My 18 yo cat who died last November used to cry. He was senile and had lost his hearing. I just would go to him and tell him where I was, you could hear the relief in his voice "Oh, there you are!!" You have to be careful not to sneak up on him, especially when he was sleeping and didn't hear you come in the door, poor thing almost had a heart attack! As for when to let him go (AKA rainbow, kitty heaven whatever), you will know the right time and your cat will let you know too. You love this cat and it will all play out as it is supposed to.
