Vancouver day trips - Vancouver meetup?

Hi Members,

I'm going to be in Vancouver next month so I had 2 questions;

Firstly do members know of good day trips from Vancouver or cool things to do and see within a few hours of the city?

2nd - If members from Vancouver were interested in a meetup, I'd love to meetup, say hi and take some cutie pics...
any takers?

Thanks!

marko

We went to Vancouver this past February (it was already green!).

I recommend the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Treetop Adventure (www.capbridge.com). It's easily accessible by public transit (I love love loved Vancouver's public transit system, far superior to Toronto's!!!!).

We did a day trip to Victoria, it was my first time on a long ferry ride. Victoria is fairly pedestrian friendly. We took the bus from the ferry terminal right to downtown Victoria and then walked everywhere.

There's also a migratory bird sanctuary in Delta http://www.reifelbirdsanctuary.com/.
We saw a mating pair of Sandhill cranes and a Great Horned owl tending her nest while her mate sat in a nearby tree keeping watch.

I also recommend renting a cruising bike and riding the sea wall around Stanley Park, many beautiful photo ops.

Marko, you know I think Stacer hit most of them on the head. If you're not afraid of heights the suspension bridge is a beautiful hike. Grouse mountain is in the same area (ish) and gives a great view of the entire lower mainland - there's a gondola lift up the mountain. The bird sanctuary is awesome, and Victoria is always beautiful, but very costly to take the ferry if you want to take your car on these days - but they do have walk on and transit. Sorry I can't offer a meet up, we're a little out of town and in the middle of renos for the next while so no time off for me. But do enjoy your visit, and remember what our saying here is, If you don't like the weather just wait five minutes.

I meant to add Grouse mountain, but couldn't remember the name

It's on the same bus route as Capilano, we did them both on the same day. They have a wolf "sanctuary" (I use that term loosely) at the base and I think there are bears at the top. We didn't take the lift up as it was a crazy foggy day and we wouldn't have been able to see anything.

Hey Marko - I'd love a Vanc pets.ca meet up

Unfortunately I neither have a car nor do I drive , so for me it's either transit or hitching a ride w/someone else. And I'm not able to take time off work so I've only got Sundays or Wednesdays if that works into your/anyone else's schedule I'll be there

Hey thanks for that info Stacer and Dog Dancer! I will definitely try some things on that list!!!

If anyone has other ideas for fun or unusual activities even if they are a few hours away...I'm all ears.

Cool growler - that's 1 for a meetup..I'd love it if a few more people were also interested. Sunday Sept 7 might actually be the best day for me - Maybe Stanley park? 11 Am perhaps? Just putting it out there.

Thanks!

awww your going to have a great time and all the things mentioned are so much fun, I have done the Capilano bridge scarrry for Noid but he did good! Stanely park is a must see it's just stunninly beautiful and the sea wall walk is amazing!
Vancouver is very dog friendly too which is nice!
My brother lives in Poco (Port Coquitlam) and we go over every chance we get!
Unfortunatley I won't be over at that time, I don't drive at all and my hubby is in Ontario doing military training until Jan so I just can't get there but if you come by Shawnigan lake on the Island I would love to have you for dinner or coffee fenced yard and a cranky pants Noid how much more enticing does that get!

Have a great time!!!!!

Not if you own a Pit Bull! All "Pit Bull types" need to be on leash and muzzled inside city limits including dog parks. I'm not even allowed to walk my dog down the street without a muzzle!!!! It's so sad to see unhappy Pitties walking along with their owners with muzzles on too...

I totally missed this thread - thanks to Growler I finally caught it!

Things to do - hmmm - well, of course, the very, very best thing to do is come to Vancouver Island! We have less traffic and more dog walks than Vancouver does! There is so much to see and do it just couldn't be listed in one message - so, Marko and Growler - come on over here and we can go on some fantastic Nature Walks.. Up a Mountain if you wish or in the forest or by the ocean - or all of the above...

Mind you, the bears have already come down so we'd have to be on bear alert - but that's no problem

I wish I wish I could come over to Vancouver but it just isn't to be this time...

You should also drive up to Whistler and Blackcomb. The 2010 olympics will be held there and it's really a pretty drive with the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. Whistler has lots of neat little shops but is expensive to stay over night there.

If you have access to a vehicle, you can take a winery tour in the Fraser Valley.

Wineries

Fort Langley is great - it was BC's first capital city. It's quaint and is often used in film and television. You can visit the HBC fort there as well.

Fort Langley

One of the best things about Vancouver is definitely the variety of restaurants.

Dining

Take a short ferry ride over to the North Shore and the Londsdale Quay.

Lonsdale Quay

In the evening, if you enjoy Shakespeare, check out Bard on the Beach. I try to go every year and have never been disappointed. Go early, pack picnic (bring a blanket) and get a good seat.

Bard on the Beach

If you make it up to Whistler, you can go zip lining.

Zip Lines

If you make it to the island, you MUST rent a car and drive to Tofino. Gorgeous. Simply breathtaking.

And don't forget the whale watching tours out of Steveston too. Check out http://www.vancouverwhalewatch.com/ It takes you into the Straits of Georgia over to San Juan island just off Victoria. Very cool trip, 4-5 hours I think - we've done it a few times now. The zodiacs are the best mode of transportation, but you can also go in a pontoon type boat that's covered.
If you do Capilano Suspension and Grouse Mtn., don't forget the Cleveland Dam right in the middle of them. There's a fish sanctuary there too.
If you will have access to a vehicle, you can also drive up Cypress Mtn. or Seymour Mtn. - fantastic views there too.
Downtown Vancouver has Gastown, a historic part of Vancouver, cobblestone road and an old steam clock. The Alaska cruise ship port is not from there also. Then there's Chinatown and the Dr. Sun Yat Sen chinese classical garden. Granville island has some nifty shops and is also the home of the Emily Carr Institute of Fine Arts. You can take sea bus tour for dirt cheap of the Burrard Inlet. Oh, and Science World is there too.
Hope this helps and you're gonna love Vancouver and the mountains.

Oh, one more thing to add to your list. I saw it on tv tonight and didn't even know it existed. At UBC there is a botanical gardens and now they have added a tree top walk. I'm not sure exactly what it is called but there are suspended walkways that allow you to walk up high amongst the tree tops and look down on the vegetation. It looked really cool!

I saw it on tv tonight too and was going to post the same thing.

I also didn't catch a name for it....I was too impressed with watching the view. But I did hear them say it there is only two of these tree top walks in North America and this is the only one in Canada.

Good call! Not the best time of year, though I'm sure it would still be awesome!

Thanks growler for pointing this out for me , I have been away on holidays.

A meet-up sounds great to me, I live in North Van and would be happy to host a BBQ if anyone is interested??
