Question What's in a name?

Hey there everyone, I have been so busy sending pups home this past month that I have kinda put you all on the back burner, sorry. After reading many of the recent posts I feel urged to post this.

It seams that there are a number of people out there who do not realize that the cute, new "breed" they are inquiring about is actually a mix. So, I thought I would scratch together a list of all those "breeds" with an explanation as to what they actually are. Please feel free to add any of the ones I missed, and I am sure that I will miss some.

The "oodles"

Labradoodle (Lab x Poodle)
Goldendoodle (Golden ret. x Poodle)
Rottidoodle (Rotti x Poodle)
Shepadoodle (Shep x Poodle)
Schnoodle (Schnauzer x Poodle)

(I really see a trend)

The "poos"

Cockapoo (cocker spaniel x Poodle)
Shi-poo (Shi tzu x Poodle)
Wheatipoo (Wheaten Terrier x Poodle)
Jack-a-poo (Jack Russel x Poodle)
Yorkiepoo (Yorkie x Poodle)
Eskipoo (Eskimo x Poodle)
Westipoo (West Highland White Terrier x Poodle)

And the others

Chug (Chihuahua x Pug)
Puggle (Pug x Beagle)
Morkie (Maltese x Yorkie)
Bassadore (Basset x Lab)
and the worst, Schnottie (Schnauzer x Scottie)

If I have missed any please update the list. I am not trying to start fights with anyone who may have one of these dogs, I am just trying to let the uneducated know that a "designer breed" is not a breed at all, just a dog designed by someone to make money off of their poor pet.

Ooo I have:

Chowerd --- German Shepherd, Chow
Borauscol -- Border Collie, Australian Cattle Dog

And if I bred them they would be:

Choauserd

Of course they are both fixed, so I guess that won't happen. Oh, I didn't pay anything for my mutts either. But I love them dearly.

You forgot one of the more popular ones: Schnoodle (Schauzer + Poodle)

My mom has a ShiLhasa (Shih Tzu + Lhasa Apso) But he was a freeby mutt too.

I love my freebie mutts. They are great dogs. It burns me when people try to make money off of mixed breeds and label them as "designer." Especially when my local pet store does it. Unfortunately they are the only ones to carry the dog food I feed. Anyway, for the ...

Hee hee-I have a pair of Labweilers or Rottadors, depending on how you look at it.

I really, really hope I never see that listed as a designer breed.

My childhood dog was a Corgi/Sheltie cross-is that a Shelgi or a Corltie or a Cortie? (What she was a a great dog, but stubborn!)

I know someone that bought a Puggle from a pet shop and paid around $700 for her! She's a cutie, but still, it's $700 for a mutt! I hate that word... "crossbreed" there, that's better. My sister got her purebred, papered, choco lab for the same price.

Byrd, I do have the Schnoodle on the list, it is the last under the "oodles", but thanks anyways, it made me go back and check.

My parents have a Shepard x Rotti, so it is a Shotti? or a Rotard? and I have seen the mix around too. Nice dog, scares the **** out of strangers. My sister has one of our puppies from an oops litter we had a few years ago, it is a Vizsla x German Shorthaired Pointer, so I guess it could be a ?, what would you call that? European pointer maybe since the Vizsla is Hungarian

The list goes on and on...

[QUOTE=Byrd;402036]You forgot one of the more popular ones: Schnoodle (Schauzer + Poodle) QUOTE]

Schnoodle indeed

But seriously, I wouldn't want a poo dog, the regular ones **** enough as it is

couldn't resist that one.

They used to be called mutts, ******* dogs, mixed breeds, crossbreeds ... who cares? I prefer calling them Pure Dogs, the real self-mixed mutts that is, because they have "gone back to nature" and not cared a doodle about whether or not they are both a poodle (or whatever else). As long as they are "good dogs" (i.e. well behaved from a human point of view) it doesn't matter, but paying pure-bred prices for a mix is ... crazy at best.

Sarah, I agree, there is certainly nothing wrong with the dogs, they dont care what they are as long as they are loved. It is the people who are creating the dogs and giving them funny names in the hopes of getting big bucks for them that ticks me off. There are so many good breeders out there who research the backgrounds, do health checks and only breed a litter when the time is right, and they get little for the dogs because the do not have the "cutsey" names like the others. I just hope that by informing people that the dog they bought is not a purebreed at all and they should not have paid hundreds or thousands for it, the people breeding them will not make as much money.

I know that those who have the mixes love them as much as I love my purbreds, but they would have loved them just as much if they had only paid $50 for it.

I bet if you saw two ads in the paper, one reading Labradoodles the other with Lab x poodle, the first ad would get more calls, even if they were the same price. Its all marketing I tell ya.

Of course, getting these people to stop the breedings all together will never happen

Totally. Except I guess I'm the exception ... I'd have gone with the Lab x Poodle because it's more honest!

Sure I loved my Husky X Setter as much as her Husky companion! It's the personality of the dog that matters. Do we like their face? Do we like their eyes? Are they loveable or do they shy away? And size is an issue in some cases.

What's in a name? Good question.

but I keep having issues with men named Neil, they have strange ways of doing business and we alsways end up separating, me taking my business elsewhere, so what's in a name?

Don't forget Bug (Boston Terr. & Pug) or DobieDoodle (Doberman & Poodle) Sounds like a bad cartoon character. I am amazed at the amout of money people are paying for a designer dog.

I saw an ad for "comfort retrievers" once. I think it was golden retriever x cocker spaniel. I see ads in the paper all the time for "bichipoos" (bichon x poodle). Last week I saw yorkie x maltese listed, not as "morkies", but as "yorktese".

So I have decided to give the shelter dogs breed names. We have a "piggle" (pitbull x beagle), an "Australian Bull Terrier" (pitbull x Australian Shepherd), and a "lepherd" or "leopard" maybe... (lab x shepherd).

I've seen DoberDane's, or danermans' advertised recently around here.... it saddens me to think that we (homosapiens) feel the need to force the choice on the animals... why do we need to change/alter the natural course of things?
Canines were evolving just fine without our 'special' touch I think.

mumX3!!! That would take forever!

I'd be an English/Norse X Scottish/Irish/Welsh/Native/French/German!!! And those are the strains I know about! We suspect some other things, too, but family records are a bit sketchy in some places.

I guess you could just say "I am Canadian!" and be done with it....

Now onto the next level

Now I think I have seen it all, people are breeding mixes to other mixes to broduce yet more "breeds", ugh.

I picked up a local shopper magazine to find ads for...
Bichon -pom-poo puppies - $400
Pug x Pug/jack russel - $600
Shorki-poo pups, shihtzu/poodle x yorkie/poodle - $650

and then I see this

Purebred Standard Poodles, 4 months old, papers and shots, $250. This is soo sad.
