Thinking about Newfoundland
Hey members,
I'm thinking about going to Newfoundland for the first time in the very near future maybe for about 2 weeks. I know it sounds ridiculous but can people point out fun things to do in Newfoundland. I'm into photography bigtime but I'm traveling with my wife so i don't want the trip to only be about photography....but great photo spots are of course appreciated. many thanks in advance, marko

Hi Marko, I was in NL a long time ago but the best thing that I recall is the ferry landing at Port Aux Basques (sp), we landed very early in the morning and the colors of the homes and the sun rising was so very beautiful. Not sure of course if you will be taking the ferry or flying but it is a very special memory of my first sight of NL. I hope you and your wife have a great visit. pbp

Thinking about Nfld.
I e-mailed you some things I remembered about Newfoundland. I would highly recommend visiting it to anyone who loves nature and the outdoors.
It is an incredible place and the people are very friendly. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Been many times, it's beautiful. I'd suggest a boat ride or kayaking to see the whales and dolphins up close or they have fantastic hiking trails that will bring you close enough, binoculars are not needed
Can't wait to see what kind of icebergs you'll capture - majestic! Depending on when your going there's always festivities, just check out their site. Whatever you do I'm sure you'll have an amazing time, so much wildlife too

I second the suggestion for the whale boat tours. They have those in Perce also which isn't terribly far from us and it's absolutely amazing to see the whales and orcas close up. On a good day you can see Right Whales, Humpback Whales, Orcas, Seals and probably the occasional Tuna chasing after a mackerel school. Mackerel fishing is fun too and ideal in July. We plan to go soon and catch some for kitty and the girls.

Thx so much for all the info everyone!

We'll likely stay in St. Johns for a few days, head south to St. Pierre and Miquelon for a few days and and return. Then we'll likely drive slowly toward deer lake. Aside from that, totally open so any additional suggestions are appreciated. Thx! marko

Marko, grace said for sure go see the whales, and recommended Sandy Point. She says pretty much anywhere you go, you will enjoy it and get some great pics.

Just a few thoughts:
In St John's, the downtown and waterfront are nice walking areas this time of year. Beautiful old homes with lots of colour. Don't forget to make your way up Signal Hill and take a hike along the trail right off the ocean. Check out if there are any shows downtown at the time or visit Shaespeare by the Sea. And of course George Street. If you are there in time for the St. John's Regatta check it out in August. There are also a lot of local festivals that happen across the island at various places during the summer, like the Salmon Festival in Grand-Falls in July or small town holidays that happen with fairs and shows. Whale watching tours are available just outside the city and are great fun. And there are iceberg tours available which are amazing. St. Pierre et Miquelon is a beautiful place. I assume you'll be going over from the Fortune/Grand Bank ferry. My mother's family is in Grand Bank. Nice little place but not much there. Once you hit the west coast, Gros Morne is a must. Best scenery on the island. If you can make it up the Northern Peninsula, Lance aux Meadows is worth a trip. Here is a good resource for what is happening in the summer: http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/ |

one more thing
While in St Johns, go to Chess' Fish and Chips!
The bestest.... and you get a certificate saying so Signal Hill... and then a tour of the east, Quiddy Viddy (there is a microbrewery there that's supercute and tasty!), Cape Spear... i was with a nef driving in an IROC when i did my tour... a little helter skelter. The people are sooooo friendly... and always order the sea food. k. |

My brother went to Corner Brook where his wife is from and he had to kiss a cod and do the jig. I would have loved to see that.
