Cool Congratulations Penny Girl!

Forgive me, I'm gloating...I'm such a proud Momma today .

Here's our Penny girl who graduated Advanced Obedience classes this morning . I put her new sweater (I swore I would never get one of these ) and ribbon on before coming in the door to show off to Daddy and the boys.

Ava and Lucky give her congratulatory kisses while she gets cozy under the covers to rest from her busy morning.

Hand and verbal signals were practiced in the first level. The advanced is everything taught in the first but off-leash, added distractions, and extended down/sit/stand+stay commands. Having her focus entirely on me while other people and dogs are in close proximity has always been a challenge for Penny who can sometimes not be the most friendly dog to encounter. But she's done wonderful without any incidents throughout the two levels of classes.

She only goofed once during the test today when she decided to quickly change sides. She licked the fingertips of my right hand and looked up smiling at me as if to say, "Hey Mom, you're pretty good at a heel too" . Silly girl .

Congrats! That is really cool.

What does the certification do other than just proving she can follow commands? Am curious.

On a personal level, it means more gained trust between Penny and I around strangers and distractions (she has an aggression issue we've been continuously working on). But the training doesn't stop here; this will be ongoing work for years to come, I'm sure.

Some people move on to participate in dog obedience shows/competition but that's not my intention nor my interest. We did this to help ensure her safety as well as the safety of those in our environment through training and de-sensitizing. I would, however, like to start a Tracking class with her in the Spring as a hobby for the two of us. Kind of a weekly girl's day out .

LP that is really great! I took Winston to grade 2 obediance and grade 3 would have been hand signals and no speaking / voice commands...but you know he was too young and too hyper back then! With Pennys aggression issues is that with people? and not really dogs? just wondered because it would appear she accepted Ava?? (they all look great together by the way!)

IF I could ask what do you "track" in the class you are thinking of taking? Winston has a nose like I have never seen before. He could have been a drug dog or a kadaver dog (not sure of spelling) .. We play this game with the itsy bitsy pieces of his tennis ball...he has fun chewing them into little pieces...I get one..put him in a sit beside me...cover his eyes...throw it in the yard...anywhere in the grass or garden...doesnt matter...I release him and tell him "go find it!" and he 95% of the time returns with the piece...if he brings me the wrong piece I can send him back out and he gets the right one! it is amazing to watch..he has no pattern in his sniffing...but you can hear him breathing and snorting sometimes..pretty funny actually. IT amazes people at how small the piece is and he finds it..probably no bigger than a dime..

Anyway, great accomplishment and you must be proud!

Way to go Penny!

It's with both . Off-leash, in a controlled environment, and with a calm dog, she's fine. A little unsure but, within a few minutes, will often engage in play. On leash (she's getting much better) she can now walk by another calm dog. But if she gets a chance to meet the other dog, we have to be careful as we're walking away. That's when she tends to turn back and react but I've caught on and can redirect her quickly before she does so. Yappy, barking, hyper dogs, we avoid at all costs.

Now, for people. Any strangers really when we are outside of our home. In the house, she's perfectly fine greeting strangers but we let her meet them on our terms, not hers eg., she is not allowed to greet people at the door. She's crated until we are 100% sure that any newcomers are properly instructed in meeting her.

I never asked . I'll let you know more when we begin.

By-the-way, just a little reminder for any new pet-owners who are thinking of taking classes or who have just completed one. DON'T STOP PRACTICING WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED! I had to do alot of hours at work over the holidays and it recently took me several days to refresh Penny's memory. Continuing training at home really does make a difference.
