teeth
My dog has been enjoying raw bones for the health of her teeth for a couple of years now, but just recently, cracked a tooth on one, which required a fancy, and very pricey, extraction. The dental vet said stop the bones, feed normal food and brush her teeth every night after she eats.
Anyone else had such, or heard of such experiences? |

Are you feeding Rec (wreck) bones? I only feed beef neck or beef tail as rec bones. These are not weight bearing bones that cause undo stress on teeth. Chick & lamb bones are all fine for teeth. Its just the large leg bones that you have to be carefull with.

yes, we don't call them "wreck bones" for nothing! for tooth & dental health, better to use softer bones such as turkey necks, pork riblets, chicken legs, etc. Big weight-bearing bones of large ungulates (cow, deer, etc) are very thick, hard and can become real "jaw breakers". a good bet for a big bone is a beef knucklebone, it's the "knee" if you will, and is mostly hard cartilege and not actual bone. if you can't break through the bone with a meat cleaver, it,s too hard for your dog's teeth IMO.

Yes, it was precisely those hard cow leg bones, as my vet had told me they're too hard to crack and so they won't swallow , choke, etc. Hmmm.
