Panna Update

So I wrote a while ago about Panna and her back problems. We tried rest and different medications as advised our regular vet for about two months before taking her into a specialist. He took x-rays which were inconclusive, but showed an area of interest. He suspected a herniated disk or a tumour (which was much less likely) and booked her for a CT scan to go straight into surgery a week later.

She deteriorated quickly and had almost lost the use of her back legs completely, so we took her into emergency and she had surgery early. They actually found a mass on her spine that is quite rare, they said it could have been caused by abuse but they couldn't be sure. That was a week and a half ago, and she had been improving substantially. Although they said recovery could be up to a year, within a few days she was already walking better than she was before the surgery. The only problem was that she was peeing herself, so we kept in touch with the vet who said it probably wasn't anything to worry about since she was recovering well otherwise.

She went in for a check-up today, and was walking much better than she was before. They took her stitches out and went to take a urine sample to figure out why she was peeing herself. When she came back out, she had completely lost the use of her back legs which was entirely unpredictable so they kept her for some more tests.

Since then, they've found that she has a fever, an extremely high heart rate, and extremely elevated levels of potassium. There's fluid in her abdomen and bacteria in that fluid, which could be indicative of anything from a hole in her urinary tract or failed kidneys. She was dehydrated so they gave her some fluids and she just went into surgery about fifteen minutes ago. Since they don't know what's wrong and it's an exploratory surgery it could take anywhere from thirty minutes to a few hours, so we're just waiting...at this point they consider her critical and she might not make it. She's only 6-years-old.

Really just needed a place to vent...please keep Panna in your thoughts and prayers and I'll hopefully update with some good news soon.

OMG poor you and poor Panna...you must be absolutely beside yourself

Poor sweet soul...it is unbearable when these things start to happen and you just want it to stop!

Hopefully this surgery will give some postive answers and your dear Panna will be home lickity split

Thanks diandpat, we're hoping so too.

She just got out of surgery and they found nothing wrong...actually. So now they're apparently running more tests and say that we'll know more in the next 24 - 48 hours...

Thanks for all the well wishes! She seems to be doing better today!

We were allowed to go see her this evening, although she's on so many medications she was pretty drowsy. She only looked up when she was being wheeled away which was heartbreaking.

They're describing her as stable now, but are still running tests to try to determine what's wrong. We're waiting on results from the liquid they drained from her abdomen yesterday, and they're monitoring her urine (she's hooked up to a catheter) and blood pretty closely. The vet said that there seems to be a problem with her bone marrow; her red blood cells aren't as mature as they should be for her age and she didn't seem to have enough white blood cells considering the severity of the infection. However, she's undergone so many changes recently that could be a factor of course, so they're monitoring it for any changes.

They said they think she would have passed away yesterday had they not operated, so it's really lucky that she stayed at the vet's. They wanted to keep her because her legs gave out again, and then through the tests they discovered the fluid in her abdomen and that her kidneys were shutting down.

She seems to be on her way up...it was so difficult leaving her, but hopefully she'll be back to her old self in no time. Hoping for some more good news!
