One fat cat,one medium and one skinny,a problem!
I had Vinnie to the vet today,he is a whopping 19,8lb's
Of course, the vet-tech suggested their diet-food for him,but I said no. The problem is,so far they have had one 5,5oz can Wellness in the morning and one at night between them. The vet says not enough and I tend to agree. I have Solid Gold dry for them in between(not with a good feeling).. I was thinking of feeding them canned Wellness 3 times/day and scrap the dry Does anyone have any suggestions?? They do not eat raw,I've tried.. Rocky who has HyperT is skinny,Chico is at a good weight.

Boy do I feel your pain . I don't have any suggestions as anything I have tried hasn't worked for Sweet Pea She doesn't get any kibble and half raw and half NV Instinct, canned and her weight hasn't come off.

thank's L4H,I really don't know how to do this,no more dry food though.
Chico eats more dry than the others,so he'll have to adjust, I don't want him to lose weight Yesterday at dinner,I opened another can of Wellness and Rocky ate more,as did Chico and Vinnie. Vinnie has to lose a lot,but I also don't want him to go hungry. Is Wellness better than the vets"diet-food"or should I try it for Vinnie??

Wellness is waaaaaaay better than any vet food, which has too many grains and poor quality ingredients. I would just ditch the dry completely and feed canned a few times a day instead.

Chico, I've been splitting my gang's food to 4 times a day. The one that weighs the most is Vlad, he's steady at 18 pounds and the vet said for his size, he's a good weight and Vinnie looks like he might be the same size as Vlad. Maybe Vinnie just needs to lose one or two pounds.

Thank's everyone, what I have decided on,since I am going to get their food today,I buy 2 weeks worth each time.
I will be getting 14 large cans and 14 5,5oz cans and feed them lunch, limit treats and no dry,see how it works.

Chico, I feed my cats Wellness, and I feed the large cans (cheaper, do the math, 2 x 5.5 oz cans -11 oz- cost a dollar more than 1 12.5 oz can). You should see if you can get some of those plastic snap on lids. Be careful, some don't fit well, but the ones that fit right, although harder to find, make it easy to stick a can with leftover food in the fridge and not worry about spilling.

I would just go to canned and feed the correct amount to each cat. They don't really need the dry.

I also agree to ditch the dry if you can. If you have some left just offer it as treats.
Will Vinnie chase a laser light or play with a feather wand to get some exercise? |

ownedbycats,What I plan to do,is feed them half of a large can,or whatever they want in the morning(6am)and the the rest at lunch,I cannot put it in the fridge, they won't eat it.
I'll just leave it covered on the counter. At night I'll give them a 5,5oz can and later a few treats, not a handful each, like before. I am also hoping, with warmer weather coming,Vinnie will run off some of his bulge,we take them outside and play with them.

I feel your pain too Chico2. Mookie is a little round bowling ball, Squeak is just right and Gabby is a little on the thin side. I have a horrible time trying to keep Mookie from getting any bigger and Gabby skinnier. I try to feed foods, both dry and wet that Mookie isn't wild about 3 or 4 times a week now. It seems to be helping. She eats it, just not stuff she loves to keep coming back too. Gabby will eat anything, but she's super hyper and very active, hence why she stays so thin. She'll charge right into the dogs food too, which surprisingly they let her do no matter how hungry they are. Squeak is so easy, she is such a princess and does like to keep her figure, ha,ha.

Well, this morning I fed them the large can(about 2/3),Rocky ate the most
Vinnie ate until he had enough,Chico still has to finish. It was difficult last night,Vinnie kept meowing for dry food, followed me around,it's hard to deny him anything, but I did, knowing he had eaten enough. Instead of dry food we played with his feather-thingy Vinnie also has his chair at the dinner-table,always expecting a taste, loves cheese, chicken and beef, but no more.. Any leftover chicken will be for treats. It will be a loooong process,I am sure, but I'll stick to it,I do not want Vinnie to go the way of my other white cat,Peppi()who ended up diabetic and succumbed to cancer clm, good luck with yours

I know how hard it is to say no, chico. When I was making salads and steak last night, I had 8 pairs of eyes pleading with me!
Stay strong!

I know how hard it is to have a hungry kitty . I don't think they feel any different than a human , but kitties don't know what is best for their health so we, as their guardians have to be the meanies .
What a great idea to distract Vinnie with playing . He burns calories and is not thinking about food.

I think more important than the food is the treats and tid bits they get too, although my pets get very, very few treats in between meals, so that's not going to help me with Mookie much, but it really helps keep the dogs weight under control. If I have leftover meat from a roast or a turkey or chicken, some of it gets torn up into their dinner the following night. That way it keeps their dinner new and different too.

In Vinnies case,I think it's the dry food,treats and a "tid-bit" from our lunch/dinner.
Rainbow,no,Vinnie has no idea what he's supposed to do with the laser, only Chico will play with it.

I am happy to tell you, they have all adjusted very good to the NO dry diet.
Even Chico, who used to be really finicky with eating Wellness canned is eating fine, before he used to take a couple of bites and go to the dry bowl. Now they eat 3/4 of a 12.2oz can in the morning,a 5,5 oz at lunch and again at night. They get a few treats, but not as much as before ,so all in all,I think this will work Hubby is grumbling a bit about the cost, but he forgot we are saving $42 on the dry I don't buy anymore.

That's great Chico2. My hubby wouldn't be happy unless he complained about how much the 2 dogs, 3 cats, cockatiel, pond fish and wild bird seed costs. I just let him grumble and buy what I want.

clm,the same here
Ever now and then, after buying birdseeds, suet and peanuts for the outside critters, food for Bailey+the best we can afford for the cats...hubby always grumble, but it's just something he feels he has to do,before he goes out to fill the feeders every day and makes sure the Squirrels have a nice dry box to get their peanuts

Glad they are taking the transfer to wet well . FYI, my kitties love the new EVO 95% wet foods. Fred never did well on the wellness, he seemed to have recurring UTI on it . I give wet in the morning and raw at night.

Teri,my cats always ate wet food, but I would leave a dish of dry,for in between.
They do not seem to miss the dry, since I now feed them at lunch too. So 3 wet meals daily,no dry. Hubbies are strange creatures aren't they

Chico, I too find it better to feed my cats three times a day when they are on all canned/raw. My kitties (except for Sweet Pea, who is a food hound ) love having their meals fresh.

OMG... i was about to pose the same question!
Except i have 1 fat cat(19+ lbs... but Dale is a big boy too) and 1 skinny (Chip..12lbs) cat!
I have been flipping between Wellness and the new PC Holistic weight formula... (I'm very lucky...My cats are very tolerant of diet changes, litter changes... nothing really seems to phase them). We live in a communal water bowl house... and the cats will box the dogs away for a drink... but food is not left down as then its up for grabs for everyone! Dale will devour wet (but only meat... they both don't like seafood/fishy stuff) and chip will eventually pick at it... but he prefers the dry. I've been informed that Dale needs to lose a couple.... and i'm at a loss! k. |

I too had a large 20lb cat,but he was a Maine Coon and not fat.
My Vinnie is a big cat,but fine-boned,he should be no more than 15/16 lb's. I figured munching on available dry food all day,is what was making him fat. Of course I don't want him to starve,so instead I give him a midday meal of Wellness, not as much as in the morning and later supper, they all 3 seem to like what I am doing and finish their dishes every time.

Chico I had that problem as well. When Crunchie was younger she was a little plumper than her siblings. She couldn;t jump high, so I placed the food up high and the other cats could jump and eat at their convenience but Crunchie was to heavy to jump. She lost weight and within a year she could actually jump as well but she just didn't eat as much anymore...
whatever you choose to do, I hope it works well. |
