Diatomaceous earth for fleas

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has tried diatomaceous earth to get rid of fleas and other pests? I am trying to stay away from chemical flea treatment, I worry about the long term affects of repeat exposure to pesticides. I've currently been using wondercide pet spray and wondwrcide pet shampoo with almost total success. I've heard diatomaceous earth though is also quite good and is especially good for treating the carpets with. Anyone given it a try? If so how have you found it?

Thanks

Laura

Ugh, fleas. So grateful I haven't had to deal with them in 20 odd years - we always had strays coming and going. Never had issue with dogs and fleas while they were homed with us - but anything new coming in got the royal treatment. Had a young red kitten one day that showed up on our doorstep - yes red. It was pure white after it was bathed and all the fleas removed, I can't imagine the torment. Never seen so much blood from an animal in my life.

We had an infestation once, didn't realize how bad it was til we ended up burning a couch in the back yard. Had carpets all through the house and I swear fleas will lay eggs anywhere, once they start laying eggs, they are a bugger to be rid of - you have to get aggressive.

Ended up removing the pets for a couple of days, spray bombed the carpets with raid then steam cleaned the carpets twice with boiling water and a good cleaning agent - lots of fun. Used a steamer on the beds.

If it's a continued problem, I can't see how diatomaceous earth would hurt. Can't say i've had much luck with it through ants and such but...

Yeah fleas are gross. That poor cat, o can only imagine.
We don't have a problem with them at the moment I'm just thinking preventative care. They get a good brushing too with a flea comb weekly to make sure and the wondercide seems to be doing its job. I figure you can't be too careful though. The carpet could prob benefit from some treatment. At least flea season doesn't last forever. Just thought I'd inquire about the diatomaceous earth as I've never used it. Or if anyone knows of any other natural flea treatment they've had success with I'd be interested to hear about that as well.

According to articles online, spreading it around the carpet isn't going to hurt anything. I do know some people feed the stuff to the dog or rub it on them.

I have used this product indoors against ants. It definitely worked well for me.

Please be careful, there are two different types. You can feed Food Grade. The label will say Food Grade. You can spread non food grade on bedding.
