Little brother?

This is Rain (13 months) and her little ? half-brother Flurry (5 months)

He's a big boy

Look at the chest and the feet on that boy (he's the red & white)

He's only 5 months? He's going to be a big pup!

Going to be? He already is! His feet are as big as all my big dogs (much bigger than Rain's) and he's got so much bone in his legs. Add to that the broad chest and he is one solid pup. It's all in his frame though, he's not at all roly-poly, he is well and truly "big-boned". Will be interesting to see just how big he grows up to be. He'll certainly have power for pulling the sled, hopefully speed too. He's pretty quick right now, but still gawky and clumsy sometimes too. Because of his huge joints and rapid growth I think I'm going to have to be very careful to not start his training too early.

The second pic is a great comparison for size & they are both adorable ....with the exception of the length of coat they look like they could be the same age....I agree w/delaying his pulling training too.

Rain looks like she's got "a strong eye" in the third pic has she attempted herding the horses yet?

more pics please

Maybe he's got a bit of Irish Wolfhound in him

She'll run out around the horses a bit when we're out doing chores, but doesn't actually chase after them and comes back to me when called. She's actually much more interested in stalking and using that eye on my other dog Lightning. She's glued right to his side when he's playing frisbee. Her brother Storm would be a good herding dog I think. He's always circling and stalking the horses, though he doesn't actually try to move them. He just likes to keep watch on them and he seems happiest when they're all eating in one group. He'll do laps around them, around and around, once in a while through the middle then back to circling the whole group. It's funny to see him when they split into 2 groups, he runs back and forth between them, circles one group, then back and forth. When they rejoin as one again he's very happy and goes back to doing his happy laps. It was very interesting one day to see Rain and Storm working together. We had been walking down near the back of the property and when we came up closer to where the horses were they were moving around a bit. Rain and Storm were up ahead of me and they both, side by side, went into a crouch, stalked a few steps and then dropped down to the ground. The horses seemed to take note of that I think. Storm also likes to move my chickens into one corner of the coop sometimes. They obviously have some instincts there but I don't have any sheep and haven't done any herding training with them.

Here's Rain at 5 months, stalking Lightning while he's waiting for me to kick the ball. He just acts like she's not even there unless she gets in his way. These pics aren't very good quality, they were taken on the old camera.

I keep joking that his dad must be a St. Bernard! Actually there is no question about his parentage, and he takes after his uncle Clover apparently (who's a tall, long 60 pound border collie)

Here's another one of puppy Rain, glued to Lightning's side. I didn't take this one myself and can't remember how old she was in it, but I'm going to guess around 2 1/2 - 3 months. Storm's off in the background checking something out.

Oh, while I was just going through some pics I came across this one showing some of Flurry's litter. He's the one with not too much white and his one white leg lifted off the ground. The dog in the foreground I believe is big Uncle Clover.

AAAAhhhhh, Look at all the cute puppies!

I don't know a whole lot about dogs, but I thought border collies had shorter legs. Is he a different kind of border collie? I see they are just so tall.

The thing about border collies is that they don't have a breed standard as they are bred for their working ability and not for their looks. They typically can range from about 30-50 pounds, though there are some that go outside those ranges. Some are tiny and dainty and shorter, some are stockier and taller. There are smooth coats, rough coats and in between coats and many more coat colours than the typically thought of black and whites.

Btw, if you're looking at the length of leg on Lightning, he's not purebred. He's a bc/lab mix and he's about 24" tall and 64 pounds.

Actually, I suppose there may now be a "breed standard" as the CKC just recently decided to allow bc's to compete in conformation, and I guess there would have to be some standard to judge them by. The CBCA is strongly against this however, the following is a quote from the CBCA website:

"Despite our best efforts CKC has decided to allow Border Collies to compete conformation (and all other events). While CBCA has no issue with Border Collies competing in performance events we have strong reservations about conformation showing as this will probably lead to Border Collies being bred for looks rather than work. The board feels that such showing is contrary to the objectives of CBCA. As such persons showing border collies in conformation are not eligible for membership in CBCA."

The group pic with all the puppies was not taken here and they're not my dogs (except Flurry of course). That's at the farm/rescue that 3 of mine have come from. They have their own bc's that they use for herding and herding trials, and do a bit of breeding, plus they run a bc rescue.

Here are some group shots of my gang, taken earlier this winter

Ah well Rain is doing exactly what she is supposed to , BCs should not chase the herd & are only supposed to move them when asked unless the herd starts moving themselves then they use their own judgement, otherwise its a "keep them together" kinda thing . Storm sounds like he's got some good instincts too. making them move just so he could round them up together again You don't need sheep either, any group of animal that moves all together, like a herd, will work to give them some mental stimulation: horses, cows, sheep, ducks, geese, chickens...I have heard of BC herding kids too So much of what they do is instinct, I think most of the training is for the directional whistles or commands.

This is unfortunate  I was so hoping the CKC would agree to keep the BCs out of the conformation etc competitions, they were, I think (???), the only breed not bred/shown for looks instead of what their breed purpose originally was.

So many wonderful pictures of all your gorgeous pups

I don't know how many, if any, other breeds are bred strictly for working ability. Alaskan Huskies certainly are, but they're really a type not a breed, which is evidenced by the wide variety their appearance. The different bloodlines can have very different looks. It's nice to see their purebred counterparts (the Siberians) racing too though and getting their races/miles logged in. I'm not really too up on that part of it, but the mushers have some kind of log book or passport the race marshal signs for them so that the purebred northern breeds can get a sled dog title, in addition to any show ring titles.
