Question about what the pre-packaged raw looks like

I know some of you have mentioned giving your pets the Nature's Variety raw pre-packaged food. I was just doing a bit more reading up on this on their website and noticed the picture of their medallions.

Okay, I know pictures are always different, but the picture I saw looked like pink medallions. Of course the ones I get have been frozen and I have to thaw them for several hours. When I open the package and they are thawed they're kind of grayish outside (like when you boil food) and pinkish inside. Is that normal? Do you guys find yours like this as well?

Yup, mine look just like you describe. I chalk it up to freezer-burn. Doesn't seem to bother my cat any, but one thing I do when thawing them is add a tsp of water to the container, which seems to make them more juicy.

Yes, that is normal. I asked a butcher about that and it is just the oxidization, not harmful.

Excellent, thanks for your quick replies guys! SCMom, I'll do that too with the water. I have noticed it might seem a little dry as I'm breaking it up.

Now, one more question, do you guys break up the medallions or just give it to your kitties whole? I've been breaking it up for Maks since I figure, he's used to seeing food all mashed up, so making it easier to eat made me think it would be a bit more pleasing for him when introducing the product to him.

I moosh it up on a plate for Aztec. I do that with all his food. He likes it mooshed - no chunks! Ya, I'm whipped, so what!
