Cat Food Question?

Hey there folks! I have a question for you all??? For those of you who feed canned how do you leave it for them if you are going to be away for a few days? does it go bad? any ideas on how to keep it fresh? I have not had to worry about this because I havent travelled for awhile. I have only been feeding the canned for the past year or so so I am not sure? I have a friend who will be away for 1 week. I can only get over to their place perhaps 1 or twice during the week. I have preached and preached about feeding canned and he does but now I dont know what to tell him about this scenario??

Thoughts?

Cindy

Personally I wouldn't leave canned out longer than 12 hours and expect the cat to actually eat it. Some do like the crustyness but many turn their noses up at it. Adding extra water will help to keep it fresher longer but not for more than a couple of hours.

Is there someone else he can get to come by on the days you can't be there? Or stay at his house/take the cat home for the week?

Will his cat eat out of a timed feeder? I've never used them but they usually have a cold pack in part of the set up to keep the food fresh.

Maybe it would be okay for this one time to leave out some dry food and just give the canned when you are there?
Personnally, I would leave out a light formula in case the cat eats too much of it.

I agree with growler about getting someone else to drop by on those days that you can't go, or maybe hiring a petsitter if needed. Even if they did decide to go with dry food just for while they're away, what about the litter box? Expecting the cat to use a dirty box during that time isn't cool.

Winston, the food-problem aside,I would not leave a cat alone for a week,a petsitter would be best,I don't think they are that expensive.
I am lucky my son is always available,I would not leave my cats alone even for a weekend, but I'm a worry-wart
Hopefully something will be worked out for this kitty

No guys he is not leaving the cat alone.

He leaves for a business trip on the Sunday and returns late on the Friday. I am able to go and change the litter and feed her and play with her on the Tuesday & Thursday so that essentially leaves her for a couple of days at a time between litter changing and feeding and visits.

I would never leave her alone for a whole week but wondered how those that feed wet food do it if they are going to be away????

Winston,I know you would not,it was not directed at you
I think most people leave a big bowl of dry food,I know my cats would not eat, dried up canned food.
If the kitty is used to canned only,he might not eat dry, then he could be in trouble

No she eats both but very little of the dry because I have been trying to educate him since he got her. But she does eat a bit of dry. I am just worried that the wet would go bad being left out for any given time?

I would leave out dry and only feed the canned when you're there. They can go back to canned as soon as they get back, if she's already eating some dry anyhow, it shouldn't be a big shock.... I don't like to leave wet out for longer than a few hours myself, it gets those white crusty spots (especially wellness), that don't look appetizing, I did make an exception when Smoke was sick though because she was being so finicky. I left it out more than 24 hours, she still ate it.
