Brina needs good wishes

send a few good wishes and prayers up for Brina please if you have a few seconds, she'll be having TPLO surgery on January 13th and her momma is terrified, if anyone else has gone through the recovery, could you give me some hints or tips? In cornwall we have a physio specialist and she is going to show hubby and I exercises to do with her leg to keep it mobile and prevent it from going stiff. Any help will be very much appreciated.
thank you.

Hoping for all the best for Brina, Melinda. We thought our Gunnar needed surgery but dealing with severe arthritis. It is awful when you have to watch them in pain.

Prayers for Brina coming your way.

Aw Melinda, so sorry to hear this about Brina. She's just a baby! Of course she (and you) will be in our prayers. Big hugs to Brina and you from our house my friend. Sorry I can't give you any advice or input on the surgery though. Prayers for a speedy recovery for Brina and extra strength for you and hubby.

thanks guys, Sylvie, I know it will be hard for me, I keep having flashbacks to all we did for my Daisy and watched her die in my arms...I know I shouldn't think like that because Lepto is not curable and she was given a death sentence and Brina is very healthy, the vet said she had a hard time believing she was going to be six in april, and she will be coming home to lead a great life...rambling on again aren't I?

No you are not rambling on. Sometimes things are just hard to take and this is a great place to share our feelings.

I'm hoping Brina's recovery will be quick and as pain-free as possible . Did she injure herself, Melinda?

Nothing wrong with rambling but,.....it's much better when accompanied with lots of photos .

I'm sure that Kandy has given you all the advice you need.

Chase's first TPLO on his right leg went great ......it was the second one on his left leg that had complications. Here's the thread if you're interested ....

http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread....ght=chase+tplo

And, then shortly after both TPLO's he ended up having part of the meniscus removed in one knee and then the other. Poor boy didn't get to enjoy his puppyhood at all.

Good luck ....I hope Brina's surgery goes well.

Brina

I just wanted to let u know, that my dog had TPLO surgery a few years back on both of his legs. He had the first surgery on one leg, then the second 6 months later. He did wonderful, with no complications. I think I was more worried, and stressed than he was, lol. One thing that was very difficult was trying to keep him from jumping up on couches, etc when he was used to doing so, as well as getting him up and down stairs. One tip the vet gave me was to use a sheet as a sling, and place it under his hips, and literally lift his entire lower end up when going up and down stairs, so that he isn't doing any of the work with his lower end on his own. I did find that he had a tremendous amount of swelling too, which i used cold compresses to help with. I wish u the best of luck, and Brina too!! God Bless!

thank you friendly gal, how soon was your pupper back to normal? I'm wondering because we have a side car on our motorcycle for her and I'm hoping she'll be ok by june/july to ride in it or will that be out from now on? I guess I'm wondering if she'll ever be the same or if all we love to do is over now? we walk 2-2 1/2 miles per day, go to the beach swimming, long car rides and dog parks, often weekends will find us in one bush or another exploring, what will her life be like afterwards?

tplo recovery, brina

please do not think brina's life is over as u know it, because that is far from the truth. my king took about 3-4 months to recover from each surgery, but remember, he was a big dog (german shepherd), and he was 10 years old. He also took longer to recover from the first surgery because his second leg was still injured and waiting for repair. He recovered quicker from the second surgery because the first leg was already fixed. After he had had both surgeries, and had finished recovering, I would say about 6 months after the second surgery, you would never even know he had had surgery. He was out for walk, going for car rides (although he did need help climbing into our van), and playing with our children. He was literally like a new dog!! But keep in mind, King was 10 years old, so he wouldn't be going for 2 mile walks even with good legs, lol. So, you just have to play it by ear, and see how brina is. every dog is going to be different. but i know, that king was like a new dog. we did physio exercises on him on our own that the vet taught us, simply because by the time we paid $6000.00 for his surgeries, we couldnt afford to pay for the physio, which was $500.00 per session. we took him for 2 sessions, just to learn how to do it, and one water treadmill session. all in all, he came out with flying colours, and it literaly bought him more 'time'. he was like a new dog!! it was worth the money. king passed away last month, bless his heart....but i am so thankful for the extra time we had with him...without tplo, i would have lost him 4 years ago... i wish u and brina the best of luck...feel free to ask me anything u think of. praying for u both.

thank you so much friendlygal, between you and Kandy I feel much better, they are going to teach us how to work her leg when we go to pick her up, there is a physio specialist there and its included in the cost. Brina is part shepherd and lab, she weighs 68 pounds. I feel a lot better now, I'm so sorry about your baby's passing, its so hard to lose a member of the family.

I am new here Melinda, and I am just so happy I have been able to make u feel a bit better....hang in there, and please, please, do not worry....but yourself some relaxation treats for the day of the surgery, (maybe some bubble bath stuff, a video, some chocolate, etc), then when u get the call that brina sailed thru with flying colours, u can pamper yourself that evening, because the day brina is in surgery u will be very stressed...it will be good to treat yourself that evening....don't forget to take care of YOU too!! that is my last piece of advice....brina would want u too!! sending u big (((hugs))) from canada...i will be thinking of brina and u on the 13th...best of luck. :goodvibes

Hey Melinda, I hope I didn't upset you with posting my thread about the experience we had with Chase. Like I said, his first TPLO surgery went very well ....it was his second one that we had all the bad luck with.

Have you checked out the Yahoo Groups Ortho Dogs forum? There's lots of information and support there ....
