Best canned food for cat with UTI
My 10 yr old cat Tyson is back in the hospital with the second infection in as little as 4 months. He never really seemed to recover from the first bout and now we are looking at total bills of $2,000 !
I really want to get him on food that is good for preventing UTI's - not sure if I want to buy the Science Diet stuff from the vet because I keep reading bad news about it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we are picking him up tomorrow. Thanks |

Depending on the results of Tyson's urinalysis and his symptoms, there are other things you can supplement his diet with. Corn silk or marshmallow root powder (from a health food store) are soothing to the inflamed membranes of the bladder and urinary tract, and Cosequin (from the vet) can help strengthen the bladder lining. If his urine ph is too high, an acidifier like L-methionine can be added to his food. You can also add extra water to his meals to help flush out crystals, if those are part of the problem. Omega 3's in the form of wild salmon, krill, or sardine/anchovy oil are anti-inflammatory and might help in that department. For some cats, anxiety can be a factor in the development of cystitis, in which case minimizing potential causes of stress is recommended. Keeping a routine, using play therapy, putting some Feliway diffusers around the house are all options.

Hi sugarcatmom,
We haven't seen the test results themselves yet, but are going to ask for them when we pick Tyson up. I phoned this morning and they want to keep in him for another day to make sure he is peeing by himself. AGAIN! I tried to tell the vet that as he has been exhibiting this behaviour since he FIRST came home from the last visit, that although they may have removed the blockage, he evidently had not gotten that much better after the antibiotics etc. I have picked up the grain free Wellness brand for him - I was feeding him moist (his usual) and opted for the Wellness kibble and really reduced the amount. So we are going to stop the kibble and that should make him eat the wet.... or that is the idea, right? We just simply can not afford these huge bills (hubby is currently out of work - nice recession!). I'll let you know what the test results were when we get them - it's all hobble-de-gook to me at this point. Thanks for the super fast response .. most appreciated. Sally |

In addition to feeding your kitty a quality canned, you may want to add a teaspoon of water to each meal, just to add extra flushing of the kidneys and bladder.

Yep - that is definitely a plan, as Tyson tends to prefer moister food and I noticed that a lot of canned food is firmer. Anything to help him )
Thanks! |
