Young male cat in peril
Just back from the vet - Willy had to have surgery but is recovering - and someone had brought in a 2-yr old long-haired tabby, male, neutered, declawed on all four paws, to be PTS because of owner allergies. He has some matts but not too bad, is otherwise healthy. He seems very sweet but they are so traumatized in those cages it's hard to tell. The clinic will keep him until Friday, then will go ahead and euthanize.
Can anyone help? It seems so cruel to PTS such a young cat. |

What vet? Where? I may be able to do something to save him.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the cat has been put down, rather than rehomed, at the request of the dumper's girlfriend - clearly a profoundly ignorant and selfish woman - who didn't think he could 'adapt' to new surroundings. I have to say that the vet clinic wimped out on this; they could easily have said that he was already gone. Wish I'd pulled him then and there, but I had no idea his situation was so dire. Wish they'd called me, however late. Wish...

OMG I can't believe that the vet's office would do such a thing just because the owners didn't want him anymore, especially since they knew you were trying to find him a home.

We had a wonderful home for him. I hope his owners sleep well tonight, knowing they got rid of their little problem.

Could be a legal thing, I don't know, didn't ask, I was in shock, getting ready to race up there before they closed and take his picture, maybe cop a cuddle. I did suggest that they make dumpers sign a release form, but if people are hell-bent on offing their pets, asking them to sign the animal over to someone who is basically opposing their wishes may be a pipe-dream. No, I'd fine them; anyone who wants to put down a healthy animal, and refused rehoming, would have to pay a whopping great fee. Time we stopped treating animals like OBJECTS.

The vets I know and value try to encourage them to let the animal live and if they don't get through to them....they don't pts either...they do their best to let the animal live.
I bet u were in shock, I would have been devastated.

I am sick over this, but one good thing came of it.
Someone just emailed that they had to "get rid" of their orange declawed cat NOW due to sudden and drastic allergies. So the lady who wanted the poor cat Badger wrote about went and got the orange cat right away, so his life was saved. |

Great news. Good work, LR. And good karma for Caroline, who was actually prepared to save the other fellow, even though she wanted an orange, smooth-haired, declawed cat. Wow.

Which vet was so quick to euthanize rather than allow a group to 'rescue'? Perhaps this is something we should be aware of in case any of us are using a needle-happy vet.

I'd prefer not to name the clinic, simply because of this one incident. They are not heartless, in fact they have saved animals destined for PTS in the past; last week they were looking to rehome a ****zu (and, as far as I know, succeeded). The only thing I would charge them with in this instance is a lack of imagination, but as I said in another post, it may have been a legal issue. They were blindsided.
This is a clinic that spays and neuters many animals at reduced rates, including all my rescues, and they give good care. In fact, when I was talking to them yesterday, they asked if they might call me in similar situations, so that we can act quickly, and I agreed. So some good may come out of this sad situation. Wow,first I was elated after reading Luckys post then..bang!! the tears ready to flow  Then another little soul was saved, you guys are amazing!!
I don't think the first owners will loose any sleep about killing the first cat, after declawing all his paws, they obviously did not care too much about this poor little cat....there are a lot of words describing how I feel about them, but not printable...in a Forum. Badger,I believe you are right,if the owners say PTS,the vet probably can do nothing, other than try to talk the owners out of it...and try to find another home for the cat.
