Dogs eating dead bees!
Both Mollie and Gryphon started experiencing diarrhea. We thought this was odd that both of them started. They've been eating there foods for months (and weeks for Mollie since she came home), so didn't understand why their tummies were upset?
Well last evening while sitting in the living room, we were finding dead bees all over our livingroom and also saw them flying around. So we started frantically killing bees. After about the 12th one, we determined that they were coming in from our fireplace! So we started a fire (outside temp was 74 ) to see if we could smoke them out! Today, we've killed about 30 and they just keep coming in! We called a chimney sweep who will be coming to the house this evening. We're suspecting up until we found the bee problem last evening that Mollie & Gryphon found dead ones lying around and ate them. Could this be why they are experiencing diarrhea? Oh what a weekend!

I cant see that being the reason. Alot of human civilizations eat bees also, and there high in protein. So i cant imagine a few bees would be giving them diarrhea.

Thanks Edwina. It just seems odd that their bouts with the "squirts" was so timely with this infestation.
Now that we found the problem with the bees, we've kept a watchful eye on Mollie & Gryphon's bee sightings. Fortunately, they don't appear to have been stung or have had any reactions to being stung. The bees are still dive bombing our livingroom! The Chimney Sweep guy called and said he will come tomorrow morning to assess the problem. It's just so bizarre and have never experienced this before.

Are they bees or hornets? Can you close the flue on the chimney?
I don't think they'd be the cause of the diarrhea, though--our guys catch and eat hornets and bees regularly We've seen some swelling, but no digestive problems. Have you taken a stool sample in for testing? 'tis the season for giardia, coccidia, hookworms, etc...

I do believe that they're bees Hazel. We've seen a lot of little ones (yellow jackets) in and around our livingroom.
Later this afternoon, DH opened the flue and managed to slam it down tightly. Since then, we've only seen about a half dozen come in the house! As far as Mollie and Gryphon, the evening "samples" appeared to be a little less liquid and both are sleeping soundly after a nice evening stroll. The fly swatters sitting comfortably on top of the fireplace screen and we're looking forward to the chimney sweeper's visit tomorrow morning. What an ordeal this has been!

I hope the chimney sweep doesn't throw up his hands and tell you to find an entomologist!

Well when we called him today, he seemed to be quite a character and more than willing to help us in our predicament. I just hope that we can extricate the little buzzers!
