Breeding health standard
Is our Bichon frise healthy enough to cross-breed with a lagotto? Her only health problem was a severe allergic reaction to a dust-mite infested dog who lived with us in 2012. A test showed allergy to dust mites. Since the guest dog left our dog has been fine though.

Hi, Joysee. Welcome to the board.
As for your question: if you really want advice about breeding, a good place to start is with a vet check (making sure you ask a lot of questions) and finding a reputable breeder who can be your mentor. The fact that you're asking such a question of strangers on the internet makes me think that perhaps you aren't quite prepared to take this on. Puppies are expensive and heartbreaking to take care of--and these pups would be, essentially, mutts (cross-breed dogs). Is there a market for mutts in Sweden? This might be a lose-lose situation for both you and the puppies.

Are you a member of your breed club? Have you done all the health tests usual for your breed? Is you girl a worthy representative of her breed? Is the same true of the potential sire? If so I doubt you will find a sire owner willing to produce crossbreeds, but you might.
I agree with Hazel, if you are asking questions here, And YAY that you are asking questions, so many don't, but the questions indicate you aren't ready to enter the world of dog breeding. I think absolute first step, is find out more about your own breed and what health problems plague them. |

Rarely is there one allergy in isolation, though you have only seen one extreme reaction. A dog with allergies means that the immune system is signaling inappropriately. Allergies can be devastating for some dogs, and expensive for some owners to manage. I wouldn't breed a dog with allergies. There are a lot of other issues to consider too, from teeth alignment, to other structural issues. Breeding should be done with a purpose, usually for the betterment of a breed, or some other positive goal. Having a good mentor would alo be important.

Why do you want to breed your dog when there are so many unwanted dogs in shelters already ??? The world does not need more dogs or cats , we need more people to rescue the animals on death row.

I'm with the others here - the thought of puppies is way cute, but the work involved is enormous and it's expensive.
Also as B.D. points out, there are way too many 100% healthy puppies and kittens out there that get put to sleep simply because there are not enough homes for them.
