Today is National Feral Cat Day!
Title says it all, basically: Friday, October 16th is National Feral Cat Day, initiated in the States quite a few years ago. Ferals are maybe just a generation away from domesticity...some prefer to refer to them as 'homeless'.
Ferals range from a little shy, to 'too fey to be seen'. Some can never really be socialized, but although even feral people sometimes indicate "a cat over app. 3-6 mos. cannot be tamed", I have 2 who were 1, and 2 yrs before they cat-pitulated. Trap/neuter/return-release programs, wherein cats are vaccinated/ear-tipped/s & n etc., then live in supervised colonies, overseen and fed by volunteers, work well where there is education, and organization. Studies HAVE shown that it is cheaper to maintain a feral colony, than it is to trap and euthanise cats. Alley Cat Allies in the U.S. is one of the largest supporters of TNR, and disseminaters of related info. The movement has some toeholds in Canada with rescue groups. Please do what you can to 'spread the word' re: ferals/homeless cats, as many people aren't familiar with the term...and help one if you can! Thanks.
