kibble - shelf life once bag open

Does anyone know how long a big bag of kibble once opened will be ok before it goes "off"? Does anyone use those food-saver type vacuum sealers? Or put it in freezer bags either to store or freeze? Or is it enough to close the kibble bag tightly? I heard from someone who buys enough for a year at a time - one big bag for her very tiny dog, and says it's ok - the bag is closed tightly and kept in a dark place. Sounds way too long. Thanks!

I know 'they' recommend buying enough for one month. There should be an expiry date on the bag.

thanks! - by the way, the expiry date on the bags, and any product for that matter, is for before it's opened.
