cracked paw - slightly bleeding
so i noticed while walking cash this morning in the snow (just to the bathroom area) that there was a dab of blood coming from his back paw - i thought maybe he had stepped on something, but i checked when we got back inside.
his paw pad on his smallest nail/toe has a small (1/4" -1/2") long crack on it. i went to the pharmacy, bought some non-stick gauze pads, "no-sting" antiseptic and some self-adhesive bandage. i cleaned it with warm water, the antiseptic, and then put a gauze pad on it with some neutrogena skin-aid cream, wrapped it up with the self-adhesive bandage. is this enough for now? should i still take him to the vet? he didnt whimper/whine when i was touching/cleaning it if that matters. |

kingdano if its not too big I would just keep it clean and covered if you can...maybe put a sock on his foot! their pads can get dry & cracked too! my boy has terrible pads in the winter.
I cant recall who told me about this product but I picked it up at the pet store and I love it. It really helps dry & cracked feet for dogs. Its meant for horses.. the only other thing I would worry about is if he stepped on something like a nail or ?? heres the link http://www.manentail.com/products/animals/hoofmaker.asp

I wouldn't worry to much about wrapping the paw, just keep an eye on it. Autumns had a few cracked pads this winter from playing in the yard. On what I call sharp snow, she never noticed but as soon as I noticed blood on the snow we came inside.
She has muttluks that we wear on walks and they're great but not so good for playing as she can wipe out too easily and I worry about her hurting a hip or something. So you could give those a try for walking, it will keep the paws protected and you can slather on the balm you just got before putting them on. The walk and the boots will help work the stuff into the pads. The stuff you got is good it is the same as "bag balm" but something better is a product called "Mushers Secret". Just got it for Autumn and within a week has already made a huge difference in her pads, non-toxic, put it on before going outside as needed,( as it also works like and invisable boot). www.musherssecret.net

Arch cut his pad in the fall, and I was told just to keep it clean and wear a baby sock (great size) for walks, and if he licks it put the sock on.
I did clean it for a couple of days warm water and a bit of epson salt ( make sure he/she doesn't drink any of it) and within a week it was much much better. pads seem to heal very fast, thank goodness.

The Mushers Secret uses non-toxic ingredients, if you can find some of that. Here are the dealers for Maine from their website ....

Yes, the foot pads need to be moisturized and protected.
In the old days we used Vaseline (petroleum jelly) with a sock and masking tape so it wouldn't get all over the floors. Good Luck.
