Risky dog ban eyed

Village to outlaw Rottweilers

By KEVIN ENGSTROM, STAFF REPORTER

Rottweilers may no longer be welcome in at least one Manitoba community. Village officials in Rosenfeld, located about 70 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg near Altona, are proposing to make their community a Rottweiler-free zone. The proposal -- which will receive the first of three readings at an RM of Rhineland council meeting this Wednesday --has a good chance of being passed, said Reeve John Falk.

'SCARING RESIDENTS'

"I'd say it will probably happen," he said. "I guess there are a couple of Rottweilers in the area that are causing some problems and scaring some of the residents."

The proposal to ban Rottweilers was recently made by Rosenfeld's village committee after a dog reportedly chased an elderly woman resident, said Falk. The dog -- the only known Rottie in the community -- hasn't bitten anyone but it is constantly running around free and people are worried it's only a matter of time, he said.

"My understanding is the people who have the dog have been talked to repeatedly about keeping their dog from getting loose," he said.

The incident spurred a number of residents to urge the RM council to ban the breed from entering the village.

"Banning Rottweilers may be a bit of a knee-jerk reaction, but Rosenfeld is a small, quiet community and the people there want to feel safe," said Falk.

If approved it would be the first known community in the province to ban a specific breed of dog other than pitbulls.

The RM outlawed pitbulls about three years ago, said Jake Bergen, the RM's chief administrator.

Thats rotten. Ya, just ban the breed instead of putting the 1 problem dog inside a fence where he won't get out. Good, very good.

I believe there is a town in PEI that banned Rotti's as well.

A list I've read at at another link indicates several townships that have banned PBT's.

I wonder, when the press decides they're bored and reports of a golden lab attacking and a kid if they'll ban that breed?

A couple of interesting notes. The owner of the rampant rottweiler had never been notified that her dog was a problem and the last time this dog was loose was 3 years ago!

Due to a huge outcry from across the country, the proposal was dropped!

Thank you so much for the heads up on this one. We couldn't have done it with out you. It was so ludicrious it probably would have been overlooked.

It seems to me,our society is on a"Ban-Wagon"you don't like it,get it banned!!
Instead of banning certain breeds of dogs, throw the people who abuse their ownership and their dogs in jail, puppies are born innocent, people make them what they are...
My neighbor across the street has a huge, beautiful male rottie, his name is Boss..he's a big suck, but when he runs panting along his fence, people just about run when passing
I know this dog and he's wonderful and well trained...but he certainly looks ferocious(sp?)I would not want him running after me,if I did not know him..
But,that's up to the owner, isn't it?
It all comes down to stupid people as usual and the dogs will pay the ultimate price
