Arthritis and Joint medications
Hi Kids,
We're dogwatching an 8 year old arthritic golden retriever type dog (female - spayed) that also has an extra 20-25% extra body weight on her. I don't think she's on any joint medications.....so....just curious as to your experiences as to their efficacy, and maybe which ones you've tried. many thx in advance!!

We're using Cosequin DS--it's a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement. Funny about the efficacy--lo those many years ago when we had a displastic/arthritic springer spaniel, a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon at the U of MN told us to go ahead and try the supplement, but the jury was still out as to whether or not it worked. He was quite skeptical about it. Fast forward to Priscilla's checkup with him 5 years later and he was one of the biggest advocates for the use of glucosamine/chondroitin supplements in dogs! He'd seen it work. We have, too.
Also, that weight is important. All our dogs with bad joints have definitely benefited from staying on the lean side of normal. If they start to pork up (like Brier is right now ) we can definitely see that the joints bother them more. So if you can convince her owners that she needs to lose weight, that would be a good thing! Good luck with that, though--we've found that approaching people about overweight dogs can be a bit of a touchy thing...

Double ditto Gluco/Chonroitin and I'd pick one with MSM in too. As per our Vet we bought the human variety on sale and we could tell the days we forgot to give it. IN much later years, like after age 12 with our last Lab, stronger stuff was needed. But in my reading it is as much a preventative as it is a cure, maybe even more so, so staring it soon may help. Yes, too much weight doesn't help any of us. Also, regular exercise helps. No more weekend warrior stuff for our aging pups or our aging selves.

I concur with both Hazel and Longblades re the Gluco/Condroiton and the MSM as well.
I would also ask you Marko, what kind of food is being fed to the dog? Is she on wet or dry food? If dry, I'd be doing my best to talk to the owners to switch over to wet food. Preferably - raw food species specific - it's not everybody's cup of tea - and also to look into, would be a real good quality Omega 3 supplement. It's an anti-inflammatory which will help the arthritis. Don't use Omega 6 because it is classed as an inflammatory.
