Whistle Training?
Just curious if anyone has ever whistle trained their dogs/puppies.
We bought one of those silent, "only dogs can hear whistles" and it seems to be loud even to the human ear! Is there a certain way that you're suppose to tune and blow in them? Personally, I'm not quite sold on the idea but thought I would put the question out there for any suggestins/input.

We just use regular plastic whistles. Some people train their dogs to turn one direction or the other on whistle, but we use it primarily to get their attention and/or for recall.
Not sure how to 'tune' a dog whistle.

All the dogs and even the cats were trained to "come" to a specific/distinct whistle - by mouth (not the really loud one w/ fingers in the mouth either cuz I can't do that ), also a slightly different one was used as a "come NOW". Still works to this day w/my 18yr old cat in the apt
Haven't used the dog specific whistles, though I always wondered if they elicit a different response as compared to normal whistles

We're just thinking of using a whistle for recall.
Today, I used the finger in the mouth (cause I can ) and Mollie B-lined it right to the door. We were impressed with her return but the rest of my family can't do the fingers in mouth whistle! We just thought that having one of those silent whistles to blow, wouldn't upset the neighbors when we're trying to recall. It does have a really high pitch sound and thought perhaps there may be a certain way you would have to blow into it or tune it differently--ho humph?

Nope . We had tried it when Emma was here but as soon as Ava could hear it, she went running away...sort of like she does when she hears thunder and fireworks. We have about 4 different whistles and the noise from all of them frighten her. Lucky and Penny were trained re-call early on using whistles but we've since put them away.

Yeah...that's it! That's the one we bought LP & Growler.
We tried to turn the screwy thing and blow into it but either we fall short of breath from blowing or we're doing something wrong cause it doesn't perk up the pups when they're sleeping.

I have a similar maybe the same one.. When I whistle the dogs come, so I bought it for consistency.. Only I have the exact same issue. I can't tune it in a way that I can't hear it.. It's either loud or louder..

I know Mafiaprincess...that's the problem. It gets louder & louder as you turn the screw.
I got to thinkin that if you blew really hard into the end that it would go silent but that just gave it an even more ear piercing sound! I'm at the point where I'll just use my fingers or drag out the good old fashion plastic referee whistle.
