Your favourite sci-fi film?

The reviews I've read for War of the Worlds seem lukewarm, would be interested in hearing from anyone here who's seen it?

I am not really a big science fiction fan, but some are very good.
2010 comes to my mind as memorable. Close Encounters really impressed me when first released, but I now find it seems outdated and far too long (they always seem to include the extra footage now)
And Starman. I really like this movie, as implausible and goofy as the story might be viewed - works for me as a sweet and kind of touching film
What are your favourites for this category

Not a sci fi fan either but I liked Close Encounters of the Third Kind - and ET (if that qualifies - I am sure serious sci fi fans would only consider such classics as Star Wars, etc)

Mockingcat...I've never seen Plan 9 - but have always heard about it.
I must have a look for this one.. a classic in its own field, I believe.

I dont know if any would recall this one... but "The Day The Earth Stood Still" is a very old sci-fi movie that stands up suprsingly well today. Shot in black and white, hoky special effects, but the message of the film was ahead of its time.

Those old science fiction movies are hilarious and fun.

I love "pulp" science fiction from the old days when a rocket ship could go to another sun far, far away and a ray guy made a funny noise and didn't blew a hole in a guy but just made him freeze in place.

"Forbidden Planet" is a good one.

The original "The Thing" is pretty good.

"The Day The Earth Stood Still" is a good one.

Loved the original War of the Worlds movie from 1953.

I've also seen Plan 9 From Outer Space and its hilarious.

I'm not sure if Space Balls qualifies but that's hilarious too.

I liked Space 2010 as well.

If you want to see "pulp" science fiction done very well in a modern setting there is a three hour mini-marathon of the re-imagined, modern Battlestar Galactica on NBC stations in the USA on Saturday night and a few Canadian stations like CITY in Toronto and one in Vancouver.

They'll lead off with an episode from mid-series of season one to get you into the plot then the stunning two hour finale cliff hanger.

Time, TV Guide (I think BSG has the cover of the mag this week), USA Today all call it one of the best drama's on TV. Very interesting plot lines interweaving religion into the story and the robots, who look like humans, believe they have souls and believe in a single god while the humans believe in multiple gods.

Tomorrow night - Saturday - on NBC.

Season 2 will start on the Sci-fi channel in the USA next week I think but not until the fall in Canada on Space Channel.

It's a classic, but it's awful. Bela Lugosi died during filming, so they re-use the 2-3 shots they have of him over and over again. The lighting randomly changes, the plot is barely there... you'll laugh yourself silly!

I love the 5th Element! I am not a big sci fi fan either... so maybe I like the movie just because of Bruce Willis??

Colin has almost every Star Trek film. . . . .

As for War of the Worlds - I just have no desire to see it. When I lived in England I lived in Guildford Borough - near Horsell Common - the orginal first landing spot of the Aliens in the book by H. G. Wells. . . .

. . . When you read the book, and feel his upmost distaine for Woking (Horsell Common) and then when you go and experience the town - you understand.

I guess I really wanted to see Woking distroyed. . . . .

Why does everything have to be 'americanised'?????

I too am not the hugest Sci-fi fan, but I love a good movie of ANY genre.

A good one that comes to mind is 12 Monkeys.

My favorite sci fi flick is the Matrix. Not because of the special effects or Keanu Reeves (although he definitely is easy to look at LOL) or anything but because of the storyline. It's probably the only movie that really made me go "wow, that could really be true". When I was young I think my favorites were "The Blob" and the original "Invasion of the body Snatchers".

Haven't seen War of the Worlds yet, but I remember the old one and I'll probably see it - either in the theatre or wait til it comes out on DVD.

I was in Vegas for a dart tournament when they were filming that. We were staying at the Riviera and our room faced the intersection where they were filming. All of a sudden, we hear all these gunshots and noise and we're thinking OMG! We're under attack! We look out the window and I see all these guys in Army suits running around and some charred bodies in a car. I'm thinking WTF??? We go downstairs and then we see that they have the whole area blocked off for filming - Whew!

I like it that you went downstairs and out into the street AFTER you had heard lots of explosions, gunshots, saw army guys running and witnessed charred bodies in a car!!

I loove Sci/fi fantasy movies and books.

I also love anything apocalyptic. I did see War of the Worlds. It was pretty good. The special effects were good. But, there were a few holes like the EMS is supposed to short circuit anything electronic, but a video camera works, that sort of thing... nit picky really. The only thing that bothered me was the weak, weak, weaker than weak ending!
