Neurological problems

Today was a pretty rough day here, Meiko was rushed in to the emergency vet again this afternoon

He seemed to be bloated and was walking in a tight circle to the left.

After flying him into the vet and doing 4 xrays to make sure he didn't have a blockage and an exam it was discovered that he at some point had decided to eat a whole pile of dirt so he is having a hard time passing these dried dirt balls.
After an enema and a little fishing expedition by his vet removing a few more of his top soil balls she did some blood work and a quick neurological exam.
His blood work came back perfectly normal however he did not do so well on his neurologic exam

When she pinched his pads on his feet on the rear feet he did not react, and when she flipped them ( I forget the exact term she used) it took him a good minute to put his foot back normally for both back feet, he has good reflexes on all 4 paws and when she went back to check his xrays and pay more attention to his spine as apposed to his intestines.
Once checking everything out looking for different things there was no abnormalities other than arthritis in his back that would lead to the problems with his rear.

So, once we get the dirt out of his bowels, they want to take more xrays of him and possibly set him up with a specialist as she is concerned about tumors or cancer in his brain Which she figured could explain him eating so much dirt for no reason.

So keep your fingers crossed for Meiko and if anyone has any similar experience with dogs with neurological problems or things that cause signs of such please share.
I'm pretty scared for him right now and confused as well. But thinking back to before he was kicked in the head by Miss Fe a couple months ago, i have noticed little things today that he has been doing since this winter that completely could signal mental imparement but were so subtle at the time.

Oh no, poor Meiko!

Was there any chance the neuro test was affected by the mass of dirt compressing blood vessels or nerves, or was he the same after he was cleaned out?

I'm sorry you are going through this erykah
I know how scary these things can be. Our vet just did the same test on Thorin yesterday (flipping his feet back). His right one was slower to respond, but still what she would consider normal. Nookie, on the other hand, has neurological issues. He eats dirt as well as rocks/gravel/wood. We have to watch him like a hawk. We're pretty sure his was caused by vaccines though, not injury. He chases his tail, bites himself, jerks when he drinks and several other odd little things. We were thinking at one point his was behavioral, but both of our vets are pretty set on neurological/brain damage (from the meningoencephalitis). I hope that you can find an answer, and one that won't break your heart.

He's still not cleaned out, even with the enemahe has not pooped but has been farting and burping up a storm. I asked if the results had to do with theshot he was given for pain but he had really good responses with his front feet and less to none with his back. Tomorrow when we return for another set of x rays they are going to do it again and see. It's going to be a long night I can feel it. He is uncomfortable and wants out frequently but does not even try to defacate, he just hates being in the house so much he knows to act like he needs out to get out, my luck I ignore him once and that's when it comes out

But I'll bet at that point you'd be happy to see it...even in the house!

You have no idea how happy I would be.
When she got the first dirt ball out she handed me a glove and the ball and said to feel it. It was just dirt. I'm figuring the saline enema just absorbed into the dry dirt balls which is why nothing is happening.

Has Nookie always eaten dirt? And have you ever had a problem with passing the dirt?

Yes, he has always eaten it. He hasn't had a problem passing the dirt, but I'm sure there are a few small stones rattling around in his belly
He also LOVES potting soil, so we can't have potted plants/trees or anything of the sort. If he is ever able to undergo anaesthesia, we may consider an MRI to see if they can pinpoint exactly what is wrong. But until then, we just have to watch him constantly. He isn't even allowed in the backyard by himself

Erykah, the only one I've had go in tight circles was Shady, my cattle dog, when she had a stroke at age 15. Because she couldn't get up though, her circles were done sitting down, and always in the one direction. Just trying to think if it was to the left or right, it happened 30 years ago. I think to her right, but hey, my memory is not good. She deteriorated and I called my vet out to put her down, she was nearly gone by the time he got here. I loved that one so much, still get teary thinking about her. Sorry it's such a scary situation for you with Meiko, and I hope and pray he will be okay.

His circles have stopped since he was sent into "Meikos World" with some drugs so I'm sure that was pain or discomfort related bit stoke had crossed my mind as I was waiting for the vet to call back.
His abdomen is making the world of gurgley noises for the past half hour or so, may load him up in the car and drive him to town for a walk under the safety of street lights since the bears are out full force here now and there is no way I am walking down country roads at 1 AM

Don't give up on the neuro results until the dirt is gone. Have you been giving oral fluids or anything at all besides the one enema, or are you just supposed to sit back and wait?

erykah, if he is bloated, I wouldn't walk him. We dealt with some nasty bloat issues with Nookie for a few months. The one thing they always told us was when he is bloated, try to keep him as calm and stationary as possible to avoid torsion. His was partially caused by Prednisone, but also by all the crap he had eaten that we weren't even aware of until he started passing it weeks later (3 socks, 2 stuffie toys he got at daycare and a whole intact rope toy with knots and all).

Is it possible that Meiko got ahold of dirt with fertilizer or chemicals in it?

maybe the gurgling is a warning that things will soon be emptying.....but you are describing my beagle I use to have, the vet called her "glutton gut" there is a tech term for it, (according to him) but he said 1 in roughly 1000 dogs are affected by it, it is a neurological problem, (this all took place 22 yrs ago mind you) Moocher would eat rocks, cement, bricks, wood and flack (spelling) the stuff that flies off when a person welds. She would eat rugs like spaghetti (had 22 feet of fibre removed from her once) she at drywall and not one of my kids stuffies ever had eyes or noses, she hate dirt and branches. 3 times she had to stay in the hospital and two of those times required surgery to "unblock" her. She lived on weekly doses of pepto bismo.....as she got older, other symptoms occured, growling at corners....head deep into her food bowl growling while she ate (no one was around and she was the only dog) we had to turn rugs upside down to allow her to walk in the house when she decided she couldn't walk on linoleum, ceramin tiles or wooden floors. towards the end she would stand in the corner, head bowed sleeping..........

Well this mornings update is not good, still no poop all through the night, he has let some gas out and seems to have deflated a bit but his circling is back and he is doing it tighter now
There is no way to get him to make a right turn when walking, instead he will circle to the left to get his right.
He seems very distant today and when you call his name he has no response what so ever. He is heading back into his happy place with his meds right now and I am not really looking forward to how he will act once they take effect.

My man called just a few minutes ago and said when he took him out this morning when he left for work the first thing he tried to do was eat the driveway gravel and then he snapped at him when he went to unhook his leash to put him back in the house. Meiko has always been a little prone to being a biter but never towards him ( he has snapped at me in the past) he is my mans dog.

Our appointment is at 2:40 and will know more then, but so far things are not looking good as far as his quality of life right now. Today is shaping up to be the worst day ever

Oh, you truly have my sympathy, Erykah, not the gravel eating but the circling sounds so much like Shady, we could not make her turn the other way either. Still, if it's a bad prognosis and there is no choice I know you will do the right and kind thing for your dog, unlike the lowlife who dumped a fox terrier in a paddock near here some years ago. It was walking big circles non stop, obviously suffering brain damage of some sort. How could anyone desert a dog that was like that? They certainly weren't going to claim it so the neighbor quickly ended its suffering.

You be careful not to get bitten if Meiko doesn't quite know what he's doing.

My man and I had the discussion already last night and again this morning when he called.
We owe it to Meiko to do right by him. He's a great dog always has been (in our eyes, not many people we know like him because he has always been aggressive but has calmed down in his old age)

Our visit went terrible today and I dont really have the ability to talk about it but I do want to thank you all for keeping him in your thoughts and/or prayers.
Today I left with out my little "Sneaky Meik" as it was the best option for HIM.
He is now at peace and pain free and our home will never be the same.
