very sick poisoned cat

My sons cat became very sick Sunday night, threw up a lot.. They took it to the vet Wednesday when they got home from work, should have done it sooner because by then it was just laying around hardly moving. The vet kept it overnight, and his suspicions are that it ate something poisonous. I check out the list for plants, and they had none that were dangerous. They have searched their basement, and the only thing right now that they can find is some drops of water where their chlorine tank had leaked. The chlorine would be diluted with water, but still strong. Do you think a cat would lick up something like that, having a chlorine odor? They're going to ask their vet, but I'm wondering on my own. Also, this cat is strictly indoors.

Our cat was poisoned with paint thinner when she was young and it wasn't that she licked it up, it's that she jumped into a paint roller pan that had some in it and then licked it off her paws (she was a himalayan so a lot of fur on her paws to clean).

Barkingdog, I still think it is the Chlorine, haven't found out from the vet yet if he agrees. They tested the cat again today, and although the blood levels came back good, the cat went into respiratory distress from the blood test. They took x-rays and found fluid around the heart, but I guess that's treatable. They want her to bring the cat home tomorrow because it is very stressed out from the dogs there, they feel it will be more comfortable home. So far, so good.

Love4himes I never would have thought of the licking of the paws. The vet said they probably will never find out what caused it, which makes it hard, right now they're putting the litter pans upstairs so at least the cat doesn't have access to the basement. They have 7 other cats, and are now worried they can get into the same thing, whatever it was.
