Is my dog part wolf??

Hello! I am a new dog owner and recently picked up little Kuma (not so little teeheehee) from a rescue in eastern New Brunswick, Canada!
He was from PEI and found on a native reserve along with his 6 brothers and sisters.

The mother... unknown
The father... also unknown.

The lady running the shelter was kind of a space cadet, so she couldnt be trusted. Upon meeting Kuma, we knew it was his time to be rescued.

With a look of love in his eyes and covered in lice, we saved this little guy from an unsure future. Enough of me rambling now, he was 6 weeks old.

He is 13 weeks old now.
Heres a picture!
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=313magm&s=7

Is he a husky mix what???

Your pup looks exactly like a wolf hybrid.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfdog

You should probably read up on them a bit, as some towns or areas do not allow them. Being that you have no paperwork, there is no way to prove for sure other than a DNA test.

He's very cute.. I wish I could have one like him!

Sure fire test for wolf hiding in dog's clothing

If you know anyone with small children and they have some stuffed toys one of which is a piggy, you could observe the dog/wolf's response to them and a sudden excitement at the sight of the piggy one would be a sure give away as to its heritage.

You're trying to be humorous and referring to the fairy tale, right?

I was going to suggest showing a little leg and seeing if he whistles! But I susepct the OP was serious in her request.
I'd save a few bucks on the DNA test. My friend's obvious rottie/shep came back as a beagle/pug or something! His head is bigger than any of the dogs the test said he was.
Your dog definately looks wolfie. Your vet can offer opinions as well. Wolves are wild creatures. Maybe check with a GOOD trainer for some advice early on. The only half-wolf I know has an idiot for a human and is very aggressive when he's around. When the girlfriend walks him, he's a teddy bear.

I see that ......so you weren't seeing things at all. Still hope your mom lets you adopt a dog though.

I don't see any wolf in the pup at all .....definitely husky/shepherd cross and perhaps some coyote with those ears.

I would say coyote also, we rescued a coyote/husky pup that jumped out of a truck and I have to say looked a heck of a lot like that one. Why would it turn on you? the one that ended up at our home was 3 yrs old and such a loving dainty dog, it loved my daycare to death!

I'm confused. You were ok with the dog being "possibly" part wolf but put coyote in the mix and suddenly he "may turn on you"? IMO I would be more concerned if it were the other way 'round. Coyote prey on small animals. Wolves like their meat bigger and more of a challenge to bring down.

Oh no..don't think that way. If he is loving then do not anticipate the worst.
To me he looks husky X. I do see however why one would ask if there is wolf or coyote in him. He is absolutely stunning!

A DNA test may help. It is not expensive. However if there is a breed in there that is not recognized, then the DNA test can be inconclusive.

Personally, do not let breed or a mix hinder your expectations. As long as you train your pup, go to some classes to ensure he is well socialized then you should be ok. What you need to indentify is the behaviour of your pup and what are his strengths and weeknesses. If he has prey drive then you will have to ensure that smaller animals around him are safely away from him.

Here are some very good pics of wolf dogs for comparison.

http://www.wolfzone1.com/

Note the angle of the eyes in a wolf dog is much different that a domesticated dog and I believe their paws are different, a wolf's will be more webbed. The snout is longer and narrower.

Of course, the only real way to know is by dna testing. . You may want to really consider this as having a wolf dog as a pet may be very challenging.

L4H - based on the link...her dog does not look wolf-like...

If he is,then there certainly are different challenges. I have a friend that owns 2. One is amazing and sweet but the other took on more wolfie characteristics. These people indentified immediately what they were dealing with when they got the puppies. The little more wolfie one was a challenge from the get go and high prey drive. She ended up giving away her chickens. The other pup was docile and sweet. She never caused any hardships. Both pups were bought at two different times from different parents.

Benmax is absolutely right,,,i have owned a wolfx and yes i saw both parents and the father was a timber wolf. My main concern is how much doggie experience do you have..Even if it's just a huskyX it's gonna be some work. You need to educate yourself as much as possible on more dominant breeds or high prey drive breeds as that is going to be what you're dealing with..Even if the pup is a wolf cross it will grow to see you as the alpha,,i'm going to assume your female so you're the alpha female and he'll be the alpha male in most cases. Yes a wolf or coyote x can be trained to a certain extent but i wouldn't suggest you take him to an off leash park..little fifi could show up and be extremely hyper and yappy thus triggering a reaction from your pup.

That is what my comment was for. I would not have guessed that this was a coyote X.

I'm seeing shep/husky also. I would not be too worried about the wolf or coyote issue so long as you make a point of doing some solid training with your pup. As soon as he's had his shots you can enroll him in puppy classes and then move on to all levels of obedience. Once he is properly trained, and fully trained through a good obedience course/trainer you should have no problem asserting your alpha status with him no matter what his cross. Huskies, shep's, wolf - they all have a run and prey drive so you may want to always be extremely careful of letting him off leash or running at an off leash dog park. You and a trainer will be able to determine these things as he ages. He is gorgeous and with dilligent training on your part will make a wonderful companion and protector.

I don't know if he's a coyote-mix or not but I really doubt he's a wolf-hybrid. We don't have wolves here on little ol' PEI!

Whatever he is, he is very adorable!!!
