Info to help a comm cat please

I have a male community cat that lives behind my house. He is about 2-1/2 years old and I trapped and neutered him about a year ago. He has become very friendly and comfortable with me and I would like to transition him into living indoors. My problem is he has always had a fairly consistent eye discharge from both eyes. It’s ranges from clear to a light brownish color. Everything I see online related to eye discharge as a symptom appears to be serious and highly contagious. I already have a cat living with me and am worried about her contracting a serious illness.

Is there any way I might be able to figure out what he may be suffering from? He is a community cat, so taking him to the vet would involve a trap, strangers and I would like to avoid that if possible. It’s not money, it’s just that a bad experience like that could affect the likelihood of him accepting a move indoors.

Any helpful insight would be greatly appreciated.
