Unhappy long hair chihuahua mix throwing up white foam, unable to walk after

Hi! I am in desperate search of answers or help..im lost at this point and i do not know what to do.

We have a 4 year old long hair chihuahua mix, his name is Luke. He is not fixed, but overall he is very healthy and in good health according to the vet. A few months ago he started started vomiting randomly, and after vomiting sometimes he would be too weak to stand or walk at all, accompanied with shaking of his body. Of course the first time this happened we rushed him to E.R. and they couldn't figure out what happened to him or what was wrong, they gave him some sort of shot to help calm him down and provided pills for his tummy. This has happened a few more times, maybe once a month, after these incidents hes normally back to his normal self the day after, but sometimes you can tell hes visibly sad and not feeling well, and just sleeps all day.

We took him to the vet a few times to do multiple blood tests and xrays. The vet did not find anything abnormal, and going off of his blood test and x rays he looks perfectly healthy.

Today though was probably the worst incident, he threw up white foam and was unable to walk or stand..he looked paralyzed. We took him to the vet and the vet couldn't find anything wrong with him. We just got a call back from the vet and they told us hes doing better, hes able to walk and stand but hes just a little wobbly for the time being.

The next option at this point is to do a cat scan, something we just can't afford at this point. I was hoping maybe someone had any insight as to what could be wrong with him? Maybe his diet? We feed him normal human food (rice, chicken, steak, potatoes, vegetables ect.)...and I've caught him a few times trying to eat trash or plastic, maybe he got into something? We don't have any rat poison or hazardous items laying around the house or back yard. Im just at a loss and i have no idea what could be wrong..maybe someone has experience with this.

Thank you in advance.

The first thing that came to mind was mushroom poisoning. We see similar symptoms every summer among our mushroom-loving dogs--frequently enough this year that we've taken to combing the yard for mushrooms before letting the dogs out. Is there a chance that Luke is finding mushrooms in the yard or on his walks?

Symptoms include staggering, vomiting white foam or mucus, dilated pupils (or, sometimes, depending on which mushroom they got into, contracted pupils), lethargy and shaking. Sometimes, the dog seems almost normal when in motion, but falls over when they stop... Bloodwork is usually normal at the time and, of course, xrays show nothing. Sadly, mushrooms can cause organ damage besides the neurological effects, but the blood work won't show that for a few weeks or months.

There's no specific treatment except to support the dog with fluids--and prevent ingestion of mushrooms in the first place (which is so much easier said than done! )

Thank you for the quick response! I don't think Luke ate any mushrooms, we don't have mushrooms in our backyard, and our backyard is pretty small so if there were any we would be able to see them. It could be possible though, maybe he ate some that were freshly sprouted...When we go on walks we watch over him very closely because of his bad habit to eat literally anything and everything.

My dog keep trying to sniff the mushrooms growing in my yard and I keep him away from them. Did the vet run a blood test on your dog to see if he ate anything toxic is sure sound like it.

Yes they ran a blood test and it came back negative. Hes back from the E.R. and hes doing well. I talked to my parents (where he lives), and my Dad recalls seeing mushrooms in the backyard a few times. It looks like it may have been due to the mushrooms or something along those lines. They will watch for mushrooms and pull them if any sprout. Hopefully thats all it was.

Once we started looking for them, we found about 6 varieties of mushrooms...probably not all of them are toxic, or all the dogs would be sick. The hardest ones to spot were the flatter brown ones, the color of earth and darn difficult to see under the grass. Luckily, they don't seem to be particularly troublesome...

I hope removing the mushrooms does the trick!

Hi Danny,

I have 3 year old long fur black white chi who's been having all of sudden bloody diarrhea since October 11 2016. His Diet was changed on recommendation of Pet Extreme store because they were out of his original Diet which he been eating for past 3 years " Natural balance LID potato duck formula small bites". The manager at pet extreme recommended to try zignature duck formula also LID. What he didn't tell us and we didn't knew that you are not suppose to change diet all of sudden. I gave my dog "Buddy" zignature for 2-3 days and on oct 11 he had his first bloody diarrhea along with white foaming vomits 3-4 times. We stopped giving him any food only water & light Bland diet chicken and rice. I thought its was parvo but he is mostly current on his vaccine. I took him to vet where doctor did stool samples, Blood samples, diagnosed him with HGE.

Currently he is taking Probiotics, Antibiotic, pepcid 10 mg along with bland diet of chicken and rice sometimes egg mixed. Also feeding him water through syringe 6 ml to 12 ml 2-3 times day. Gladly he is active in day time and peeing fine. Now he is constipated since yesterday afternoon which is kind of relief but I do hope that he goes for poop tomorrow. Its been

I am sorry to hear about your dog suffering because of mushroom but only reason I explained my story as you might want to looking into his diet also. Sometimes HGE is so common in little dogs. Specially vegetables like broccoli can trigger HGE. Theirs been study by some doctors that raspberry pure juice few drops can help treat HGE. I dont want to give my dog anything as he already on lot of meds. I hope your dog feel fine and have long healthy life.

Thanks
cali
