Old Dog Encephalitis

undefinedundefinedundefined

Hi! My 14 year old Chinese Shar Pei has just been diagnosed with Old Dog Encehpalitis. Symptoms:

Head tilted to one side & weak rear legs. She appears to behave like a "drunk human". The Vet has her on Prednisone and Antibiotics. He feels it is either ODE as mentioned above - or a Brain Tumor. It it's the former - he says it's treatable with those meds. If the latter - not. Does anyone have any further information about this condition? Could these symptoms be kthe result of an ear infection that has gone to the bone?

Old dog enceph?

Is that what your vet told you? There is really IMHO no such thing. Enceph is caused by 'something' not just 'age'! If this were the case every senior would get encep, and they don't.

What tests did the vet do to make this diagnosis.

REAR end weakness is odd, it should be generally one side or the other not both sides.

Viral infections of any kind that spread to the brain can cause encephalitis...which is swelling of the brain. Swelling generally goes down after time.

The ONLY way to diagnose any type of viral encephalitis is MRI or spinal tap and I don't think your vet did either of these. It seems like speculation.

Have you been referred to a specialist? What did the bloodwork show?
With weakness in 'both' hind legs I'd contribute that more to a spinal injury (compressed disc/herniated disc)

Head tilt can be anything from neurological to inner ear.

Any other symptoms: eye/vision problems (do the eyes dart back and forth, is there a tremor to them, do they 'bulge' can you see more white of the eye then usual?, bladder/bowel trouble?, incontinence, vomiting, seizures, stupor, dementia, lack of appetite?

Thats true Kona, it may very well be. I think this person needs to ask their vet more questions.

ENCHEPHALITIS in DOGS

ENCHEPHALITIS in DOGS (or brain / spinal swelling or brain tumor)

--ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT --
Natural and Nutritional Approaches

I used the natural approaches for my little Shih Tzu puppy and had great success.
