Here is a link to a video taken of the banding here in Hamilton. It will give you an idea of how noisy it is around the nest and what the falcons go through each and every year. Madame X is a fiesty falcon that will defend her babes till the end!

Is it really necessary to band the falcons? Is has to be very stressful for mother and babies having a person messing around with them.

If they want to monitor the populations and keep track of individuals, yes, it's necessary, Barkingdog. One adult falcon looks pretty much like another of the same gender--I'm sure the birds can tell each other apart but for us mere humans, it can be difficult. Since peregrines are just starting to make a comeback in many areas, it's important to keep track of things like breeding success and where individuals disperse to. Banding is the easiest and least invasive way to do that.

Amazing how quickly they grow, isn't it, Cindy! Holy catz! It's kind of sad to think that soon they'll all be fledged...

Yes Hazel it wont be long...boys are the fastest to fledge too!

It is a necessary part of helping the peregrine come back from the endangered species list to threatened now. The only way to tell a male froma female is based on weight.

They are not hurt in any way and if they need medical attention they dont suffer.

Winston, sorry I have not checked in before now....but that was one brave man scaling the wall to the chicks.
Mom is fierce in defending her chicks,it would be sad if I did not know they will be brought back.
Hope the one out of the nest is safe
Good job MadameX

Oh, I missed the fledging, Winston!! Dang!! Sounds like it's going really well, though!! Nice to hear that they're flying so strongly! Funny that the falconettes are removing their colored tapes! They want to be incognito!
