History of Veterinary care - inquiry

I'm curious if anyone here knows some history of veterinary care.

I am trying different ways to figure out how to find different leads that will help in a genealogical search.

When did true veterinary care begin? Is it possible for someone in the 1600s to be trained as a veterinarian? Or was it a time if an animal wasn't well, they would just dispose of it? Even human health care was questionable back then, so personally I find it unlikely he was a veterinarian.

My ancestor came from France back in the 1600s and settled in Virginia. We have a complete history after the settlement, but not before, and cannot find out his background in France, which was most likely from the Guyenne region at the time. Some genealogists working on this ancestor's information say that he was designated as Dr. And there seems to be some debate as to what kind of Dr. Some say veterinarian, others say doctor or surgeon.

So if it is not possible for him to have been a veterinarian, he had to have been one of the other types of doctors. The question is then where did he attend school? I think if I could figure out where he might have attended school then that would make it more likely we could try and get someone to look at school archives and find out more about his family. Supposedly he came from an affluent family so they would have been able to afford a good education.

Been there done that. Got ZERO replies. I wrote 5 European and British universities.

The problem is I don't know names for any good researchers/scholars to write personally.

The first official school of veterinary medicine was established in Lyon, France in 1761, but human doctors were often called on to treat animals (mostly horses) before that.

You wouldn't happen to know the name of it would you?

There are thousands of descendants wanting the same answers. There's a big group of us online trying to figure it out. I told them we should set up a travel fund to pay for one of us to go to France and dig through all the texts.

I do believe it was (and still is) called the Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Lyon, started by a Mr. Claude Bourgelat. Here's more info that might help (it's in French):

Yeah that answers my main question. I don't think he was a vet because he was born 100 years earlier. So since everyone called him a doctor, was he a doctor/apothecary or doctor/surgeon (leeches, etc)? History is confusing!
