The reason behind Zelda hadn't been adopted in 4.5 months...

(please get your kleenex boxes out ladies and gents)

We asked ourselves may times why we could not get Zelda adopted out. She was brilliant, willing to please, cute as a button, and loyal.

They say everything happens for a reason.

Some of you know that I have been working at a no-kill shelter in the Laurentians for some time now. Our shelter is haven to dogs and cats, abandoned by no fault of their own, while they are 'in limbo' awaiting for someone to call their own. Several leave just as quickly as they arrive, and others are with us for a some time.

Zelda was with us for 'some time'. An early morning in the fall of 2010, Zelda was running loose around our building, a chain around her neck dragging on the ground behind her. Growling at us in fear, she was caught and housed in our kennel, a warm blanky to sleep on, a bowl of fresh water, and a belly full of food. Zelda took several days to warm up to us, obviously wondering what all the hectic activity around her was about.

After falling into the daily routine of things, being vetted, and behaviour assest, a friend in Leo was found for her. Zelda got to play outside with Leo almost everyday, and was walked several times a day. Even though she had a canine friend, she always let us know she wanted someone to take her home.

People wanting to adopt an adult dog would overlook her. She so badly wanted to belong to someone she learned how to use her Kuranda bed as a trampoline to do 'flips' in her kennel to get attention. This loyal girl was looked upon as to much by people.

Yesterday a phone call came in at the end of the day, the gentleman claiming (rather excitedly I might add) that we have his dog. We told him that its just a picture, he should come to our shelter to see for himself if it really is her.

They drove over 100kms, and without getting too excited we went to see her in the kennel. Claiming 'that is my dog!' Zelda rubbed her body from side to side on the bars of her kennel. I was lost for words (for just a small moment), and my stomache jumped to my throat.

They say everything happens for a reason. We can now tell ourselves that Zelda not getting adopted out must have been a sign that she was waiting to be reunited with her 'parents'.

Thanks for sharing that wonderful story. I wish it worked that way for more lost pets.

It is my fervent wish that more pets would be returned to their families. I'm sure after a time when they can't be found the owners give up and find a new pet.

Our Sammy when she was younger wandered off twice and was picked up by Animal Control. (This was before I joined the family). She was brought back home after Daddy paid her bail and told quite firmly the second time if she did it again she was going to have to find a new home. Guess who never wandered off again. I know that's not quite the same thing but it's kind of a cute story.

Was there every an explanation about the chain around the neck? Was it a chain that they recognized, or was it a chain put on the dog by an unknown person? Any idea?

I've always wondered about my friends dog. He was off a transport from a high kill area in Ohio. He has a VERY great temperament and was about a year when he was transferred to our shelter. He's a german shepherd husky mix. He wasn't neutered though.. and was picked up as a stray in Ohio. Wasn't claimed there But he's very unique looking and I always wonder if someone is back in Ohio missing him. I doubt it, but it makes you wonder.

It just had to be fate, there's no other explaining it. Wish I was there to have seen the reunion . I'm so happy Mymy's family never gave up on her. Many thank you's to you and the shelter for taking such good care of her, Brianna .

damn, if only we had a camera set up in our kennel - the 'reunion' between the two is just unexplainable. again, I am at a loss for words...soooo happy she was reunited with her family!

In that case it's a wonderful story!.
Talk about the stars being aligned.

If this is not a feel good story...I don't know what is.
Thank you for asking about the chain.

OMG, that made my hairs prickle . I DO believe in fate and things happen for a reason. This little guy was meant to be back with his owners .

Thank you so much for sharing that story, I only wish we heard more like that.
