Cat Food Recipes

I finally conducted some research and found some recipes - in many differing places, from friends, the Farmers' Almanac, etc.
Here is my current list. I already give my kitties sardines so I think they will like the first one. However, I will have to get some taurine supplements if I am going to feed them like this.

I've added some links at the end of the page.

Kitty Heaven

2 cans sardines packed in oil
2/3 cup cooked rice
2 chicken livers, cooked in water and drained
1/4 cup chopped parsley

1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender and process just until mixture is blended. Store in refrigerator, tightly covered.

==================

Gotta Have Sole

1/2 pound fillet of sole
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
Water
1 tablespoon margarine
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons chopped liver
1/2 teaspoon iodized salt
2/3 cup cooked rice

1. Place sole in a small, greased baking dish. Sprinkle with the parsley. Add enough water to just cover the bottom of the dish. Bake in a preheated 450*F (230*C) oven for 10 minutes. Cool then and shred with a fork.
2. Melt margarine in a small saucepan. Stir in flour and heat until bubbly. Gradually stir in milk and cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and add cheese, liver, and salt, stirring until cheese has melted.
3. Add the flaked fish and rice to cheese sauce and stir well. Cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
=================

Finicky Feline Diet

1 cup chopped cooked chicken
1/2 cup cooked rice
1/2 cup chopped broccoli, cooked until tender
1/4 cup chopped carrot, cooked until tender
Chicken broth

1. Process all ingredients in a food processor or blender with enough chicken broth to hold together. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

=====================

Mackerel Cat Munchies

1/2 cup canned mackerel, drained
1 cup whole-grain bread crumbs
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 large egg, beaten
1/2 teaspoon Brewer's yeast, optional

1. In a medium-sized bowl, mash the mackerel with a fork into tiny pieces. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.
2. Drop mixture by 1/4 teaspoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet.
3. Bake at 350*F (175*C) for 8 minutes. Cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
=================
Vitamin-Rich Feline Meal

2/3 cup cottage cheese
1/4 cup biscuit mix
4 chicken livers, cooked in water, drained and chopped
2 tablespoons corn oil
Pinch iodized salt

1. Mix all ingredients together well.
2. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
================

Tuna Kitty Treats

1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup nonfat powdered milk
1/2 can tuna, in oil or 1/2 cup cooked chicken, chopped into small pieces
1 tablespoon vegetable or cod liver oil
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup water

1. In large bowl, mash the tuna (or chicken). Add the flour and powdered milk, mixing well. Stir in the water, oil and egg, mixing well. Mixture will be sticky.
2. Shape mixture into 1/2-inch sized balls. Place on greased baking sheets. Press balls to flatten.
3. Bake at 350*F (175*C) for 10 minutes. Remove treats from oven; let sit 5 minutes and then turn treats over and bake another 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely on wire rack. Store in an air tight container in refrigerator.
=====================

Kitty Breakfast¹

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp. nonfat dry milk
3 medium eggs
3 Tbsp. cottage cheese
2 Tbsp. grated veggies

Mix together the milk powder with a small amount of water; add the eggs and beat well.

Pour into a small non-stick frying pan and cook on medium low until done. Flip over and spread the cottage cheese and veggies over half the top. Fold like an omlet. Cool and cut to bite-sized pieces to serve.
===================================
Almost-Spot's Stew¹

Ingredients:

1 whole chicken, preferably "free range" or packaged with "no hormones or antibiotics" on the label
2 cups brown rice
6 stalks celery
8 carrots, scrubbed but not peeled
2 or 3 yellow squash
2 or 3 zucchini
1 small broccoli crown
handful of green beans²

Wash chicken, then cover with water in a large stew pot. Cut vegetables into pieces and add to pot. Add rice. Cook until chicken almost falls off the bone and vegetables are tender. Completely debone the chicken. This is extremely important, as cooked chicken bones can splinter and cause serious intestinal damage. Pour the stew into a blender and blend or chop until mixture is coarse (about bite-sized). Freeze in meal-sized plastic bags.

²Garlic for cats is in a "gray zone." Some experts believe it causes Heinz body anemia, as onions do; others consider it beneficial for some conditions. Since I have a policy of "better safe than sorry," I have omitted the garlic from this original recipe.

I almost have my kitties eating home cooked (with the help of a nutritionist at the Vet school who has assisted me over the phone mostly) but they still want some Wellness stuff. It something one has to do very slowly!!! And I give them taurine and other supplements she recommends. (I knew about taurine, not all the others.)

Hey I didn't notice this till just now!!! I find it strange that not many people seem very interested in cat food recipes. I just posted these ones in another thread yesterday hoping to get some feedback:http://www.download.com/Cat-Food-Rec...-10661724.html Some are the same as yours CK.

I was also concerned that if I ever did home cooked how i'd decide which vitamins to add and how to keep the diet balanced? Are you giving a special multivitamin? I'm also confused about the dairy, I kind of thought cats were lactose intolerant?

I just saw this. Very yummy recipes. I like the kitty breakfast, but I'm wondering about the cottage cheese. It the amount small enough to where it doesn't bother their stomach? What with the lactose problem with cats.

Red face Wonderful recipes - but omit the salt

Wonderful recipes! I would omit the 1/2 teaspoon salt in the one recipe though. It doesn't add anything nutritionally, and you don't need it to encourage a cat to eat things with fish or poultry. Even the chicken broth in the later recipe should be the real deal - not canned, because there is so much salt added to canned broth. Respectfully submitted.

Hi
I didn't think cats were suppose to eat grain or veggies; according to links in the raw diet forum I "thought" I had read? But I could be wrong, I'm still learning about what is right for cats to eat.

Some of those recipes sound very yummy though.

You're right. I think there are better recipes out there for home made cat food. A minimal amount of low-glycemic veggies like zucchini or green beans are okay for a bit of fiber, but grains are completely unnecessary.

Does anyone know how much homemade food to feed. Is there chart that tells you by weight how much to feed per day?

The general rule, according to the National Research Council, is about 20-30 calories per pound of ideal body weight per day. Depends also on the individual (age, activity level, health, etc.). Less specifically, if the cat needs to lose weight, feed less, if it needs to gain weight, feed more.

Worst ingredients..

I just had to register to reply to this thread. These are some of the worst recipes I've encountered. The following ingredients should not be a part of a cats diet:

Rice
Margerine
Milk
Cheddar Cheese
Paramsan Cheese
Salt
Carrots
Vegetable oil (canola or soy are bad)
Cottage Cheese
Biscuit mix??
Corn anything
Whole Wheat anything
Oats
Brewers Yeast

Hi Dannyw, welcome to the forum.

Hopefully you will stick around for a while.

I agree that cats are carnivores and only require an appropriate proportion of meat/organs and bone for their diet.

On a side note:

I saw this thread and the OP cyberkitten, I was hoping she was back but it is an old thread.
