Death Sentence For China's Drug Regulator

China's Ex-Food and Drug Chief Sentenced to Death

The sentence, announced by state media, comes as China is under growing domestic and international pressure to clean up its food and drug sectors after a series of scandals, including the poisoning of hundreds of American pets.

That's certainly a far harsher sentence than he would have received in North America.

On March 25, 2003 Stan Koebel and his brother Frank were charged with public nuisance, uttering and forgery and breach of public duty. Frank Koebel was the foreman of the town Public Utilities Commission. On November 30, 2004, the pleaded guilty. Three weeks later, Stan Koebel was sentenced to a year in jail. Frank Koebel was sentenced to nine months house arrest.
they should have been charged with at least manslaughter for the 7 deaths their failure to do their jobs caused

I agree. Walkerton was an incredible all round miscarriage of justice.

Michael Enright hosted an excellent program on production and regulation of food/ food ingredients and composite food products from China on CBC1 this morning. If you didn't catch it ~ it's worth a listen via their website.
