Nutram Cat Food

im not sure if i mentioned Lola isnt eating the dried food her previous owner gave her so friends with cats have been giving me loads of little samples (including the petshop!) of various dried food and one she loves is Nutram but looking at the ingredients im not too sure if its that good for her...

has anyone gave it to their cat? i was going to try the urinary one as she has had crystals in the past.

If she's prone to crystals, she shouldn't be eating ANY dry food. She needs the higher water content of wet food to help flush them out. As well, the ridiculously high carbohydrate content of most dry foods (Nutram included) creates an alkaline environment in which struvite crystals are more likely to form in the first place. The solution is to feed a quality meat-based wet food, preferably grain-free or at least low in carbs (under 10%). Wellness, By Nature Organics, Nature's Variety, Precise, some Merrick flavours, even gluten-free Fancy Feast would all be better than any of the dry foods out there. Here are some various ingredients for you to compare:

Nutram Adult Cat dry:
Quote:
Ingredients:
Chicken meal, ground rice, select whole grain corn, corn gluten meal, chicken fat (preserved with Vitamin E), flaxseed, natural flavors (chicken, tuna, crab, salmon, shrimp, turkey), chicken, herring meal, pea fiber,.....
Nutram "Super Premium" (ha!) Urinary Care dry*:
Quote:
Ingredients:
Chicken Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Ground Rice, Select Whole Grain Corn, Chicken, Chicken Fat (preserved with Vitamin E), Chicken Digest, Fish Meal, Flaxseed, Pea Fiber, Dried Beet Pulp, Phosphoric Acid, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Dried Brewer’s Yeast, Cranberry Extract, .....
*(basically, they add salt to make your cat pee more, and then a teensy amount of cranberry extract to try to acidify the urine )

Compare the above to canned By Nature Organics Chicken:
Quote:
Ingredients:
Organic Chicken, Natural Well Water, Organic Chicken Liver, ....
Precise Chicken canned:
Quote:
Ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Brown Rice, Oat Bran, Dried Egg Product, Lecithin, Brewers Dried Yeast,....
Wellness Chicken canned:
Quote:
Ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Liver, Turkey, Chicken Broth, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Natural Chicken Flavor, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Flaxseed, Squash, Cranberries, Blueberries, Zucchini,.....
